how long has it been now? since everything changed? since the skies darkened and the heavens twisted- since he was broken down and had to rebuild? how long since gilbert o'glaucascur was naive enough to think he was only human?

sometimes- no, often- he remembers what it felt like to die as many times as the mortals around him.

he remembers leon, too. not only as champion of galar, but as a person. as someone who tried to do the right thing. someone who had been prone to human pride and the ability to grow and ... leon was a good man. gilbert thought that.

eternatus looked at leon and saw a form of strength. a shadow of the heroes of old. but it was not leon who stood with the relic in hand, was it? no sword and no shield, just human bravery and stupidity. eternatus could respect that.

he doesn't know exactly what to do, other than watch leon. gilbert was loved by the people of galar, as the son of diarmuid o'glaucascur, as steward prince. they did not question him when he said he bore scars from the battle with eternatus. they did not ask more when he said the old god had fled back to its domain. they never looked too closely, and so he continued to lie about his own humanity. but he did not lie about the fact that he cared for galar.

his father, already aware of the truth, had not chosen another successor. because gilbert was not simply a tulpa of eternatus. gilbert sought to protect the people he had lived with. that he loved, like real people did.

he knows there is nothing he can do to change the past, now. he can't think of the words to say to leon. his gaze is soft and sad and knowing.

he thinks of the history of galar. wyndon was built upon the bones of the old god. pieces of its corpse were cut apart and made into wishing stars. enough was brought to hammerlocke and hidden away- so that a tragedy would inevitably come in the form of a golden haired young man who only wanted to do right by his father, his brothers, his loved ones.

he's been staring too long. he looks away.

it's easier like this, for the people around him to pretend that eternatus is not always watching.
