괄호가 없이 덧셈과 곱셈이 이어 나오는 경우에 왜 곱셈을 먼저 계산할까?

덧셈과 곱셈은 이항연산이고, 그것의 표기를 할때에 a+b, a×b 와 같이 두 항 사이에 기호를 쓴다. 이와 같은 기호 표현을 Infix Notation이라고 한다.

위에서 괄호를 쓸 수 밖에 없음을 설명했지만 왜 곱셈을 우선하는지에 대해서는 사실 설명한게 없다.

왜냐하면 덧셈을 우선해도 괄호 사용은 여전히 그 전 보다는 경제적이기 때문이다. 덧셈 보다 곱셈을 우선하는 이유를 따져봐야 했다.

박부성 교수의 설명은 다음과 같다.

다만 지금과 같은 규칙이 정해진 것은 곱셈, 나눗셈의 괄호를 생략하는 쪽이 조금이라도 편한 점이 있기 때문이다.

여러 가지 이유를 생각할 수 있겠지만, 기본적으로 다음 두 가지 정도를 생각할 수 있을 것 같다.

두번째로는 덧셈은 계산이 간단하지만 곱셈은 상대적으로 어렵다는 점이다.

수식을 나타낼 때, 때로는 그 결과를 끝까지 계산해서 나타내는 것이 불편할 때가 있다. 이 경우 수식을 적당히 정리해서 간단한 형태를 만드는데, 예를 들어 (123×456)+789와 123×(456+789)를 생각해 보자.

이 경우, 456+789와 같은 덧셈은 간단하게 하나의 수로 고칠 수 있지만 123×456을 하나의 수로 고치는 것은 좀 불편하다. 그렇다면 이 수식은 (123×456)+789와 123×1245로 나타낼 수 있고, 역시 곱셈 쪽의 괄호를 생략하는 편이 조금이나마 효율적이다.

박부성 교수가 네이버 캐스트의 ‘수학 산책’에 연재한 글에는 더욱 자세한 설명이 되어 있다.

‘수학 산책’에서는 설명하지만, 곱셈과 나눗셈이 섞여 있는 경우에는 혼동의 여지가 없도록 괄호를 쓴다는 것에 대해서도 따져보지 않았었다.

그리고 ‘Infix Notation’을 중위 표기법이라고 부르는 것도 새롭게 알았다.

2+3×4 에서 덧셈을 먼저하면 20이지만 곱셈을 먼저하면 14이듯이 무엇을 먼저 계산하느냐에 따라 값이 달라지면 2+3×4는 ‘잘 정의’되지 않은 것이다. ↩︎
