scraps is one of the last standing animal companions (a line of robotic pets that went through several controversies [developing such close bonds with their owners that they severely injured other people when they need to be repaired and developing "true" personalities are just a couple] before being shelved/destroyed) that sat and rotted for 20 years after a system error fucked him up. cassie and zac find him, bringshim home. cassie has a couple other animal companions that are all in various stages of decay but scraps is special.
he wanted to save zac's sister from being kidnapped. he failed. when he powers back on and learns that she's still missing, he feels that guilt hard. also he developed a true personality (bare-bones ones are programmed in but with enough prodding they become more fleshed out. ai is a part of it but only partially) so it sucks worse for him.
despite looking fucked up, he doesn't want to be fixed. even when he's made aware of his appearance, even with his fucked up leg(s). not because of any emotional reasons he'd just Prefer To Look Like That. also. his face has flat fuck friday written all over it. i still think it's the funniest shit ever; i need to draw him again bc none of the old art shows it off accurately.
OH YEAH ALSO the material on his face is completely solid, at one point his mouth trying to move finally makes it split apart. he can't feel pain so it's fine. this will be on the test.
