Sometimes Bucky still has to sweet talk Gale, comfort him like a skittish horse, tell him it’ll be okay afterward so that Gale won’t call the whole thing off in the frightening clarity that follows. Sometimes Gale just says no. He can’t always say yes or he’ll never stop saying yes. Maybe if he only says it occasionally, the universe won’t notice. Maybe if they feather all the props, their momentum won’t stall out. If they keep it quiet and sporadic, maybe the ground will forget to come up and meet them at all. Other times, Gale can’t keep his hands to himself long enough for Bucky to start convincing him.
