Senior Curator of Collections Eve Straussman-Pflanzer and Visiting Lecturer in Art Barbara Lynn-Davis explore representations of Venice in the exhibition, with particular focus on how Venetian artists experienced, represented, and imagined their city during the height of the Grand Tour.

Symposium: The Art of Science in New England, 1700-1920 Saturday, March 15, 2014  |  9:00 am - 4:00 pm Collins Cinema

The 2014 Wellesley-Deerfield Symposium will explore visual representations of scientific inquiry produced, collected, distributed or otherwise circulating in New England from the start of the 18th century to the first decades of the 20th century. Scholars from a wide range of disciplines will address a variety of topics from the use of anatomical and biological models in scientific pedagogy to the impact of mechanical inventions for enhancing vision on artistic and scientific practice.

TONY MATELLI: ARTIST’S PICK

To coincide with his exhibition New Gravity, artist Tony Matelli has selected four of his favorite films for a series of screenings. Following each, Cinema and Media Studies faculty will discuss the artist’s selections—and the intriguing notes he has provided on his choices (below)! Matelli will join the conversations on April 30.

Close Looking Session:  Sleepwalker Friday, February 28 at 11:30am Meet outside at Sleepwalker site, behind the Davis Museum Be sure to bundle up!   Join Davis Museum educator Liz Gardner for a close looking session focused on Sleepwalker, an outdoor sculpture featured in the special exhibition Tony Matelli: New Gravity.  Rooting our discussion in visual observation and analysis, we will explore the ways in which various experiences affect the process of making meaning from this hyper-realistic figure.  We will also consider how emotion and ideas converge in art through thinking critically about the sculpture’s formal characteristics and the process of its creation.  ?:egardner
