I was thinking abt how Henry's baseline level of okay is pretty uh awful because he's gotten used to feeling pretty hopeless about things. Hes not surprised when something bad happens. He let's it hit him, let's it fuck him up and keeps going because that's just how things are. That's life.

When things are good, he cant really enjoy it though, because hes always waiting for things to go badly again. Hes always waiting for something to happen. What this means for relationship, friends or otherwise, is that even if he likes someone either just as a person or romantically, is he will keep a distance. He'll never really connect on a deeper level than superficially unless the other person is particularly persistent. Or even just keeps in contact, stays in his social circle until they're a permanent fixture. But Henry's also the type to disappear and disengage because he's always paranoid. How long is this going to last before it goes badly again?

It makes connecting with him difficult. And he tells himself hes okay with that, with his loneliness because it's safer for him and others.
