Wolf Cop: Chapter One
The night Summer air was humid in southern Oregon as Detective Maria Lopez approached the car she had pulled over minutes earlier. The dim glow of the headlights highlighted her bronzed skin. She approached the car carefully with her flashlight out and shining at the window. She shined the light in his face when she got up to the driver side door. The driver was a young man in his late twenties, his shaggy brown hair looked wild and his breathing was quite erratic. He looked quite agitated as Maria tapped on the window and he rolled it down.
“You have any idea how fast you were going?” Maria asked as she pushed her long wavy hair out of her face, the man who was clenching his jaw tightly. Maria paused for a moment, noticing the strange behavior. “Sir, are you alright?” The man groaned loudly and Maria thought for a moment his eyes reflected gold in the bright full moon light.
“Guuh, Grraah!” The man yelled as he began to jerk and spasm in the car seat. Maria quickly reached inside and opened the door.
“Hold on sir!” She began to try and help him out of the car, assuming he was having a seizure. However he reached out and grabbed her shoulders, a searing pain caught Maria off guard as he tried to reel back. The sound of shredding fabric echoed as he pushed her hard and she fell backwards. He barreled out of the car and quickly hobbled to the tree line. Maria reached up to her shoulder, there was a little blood and her jacket was rended. She dragged herself to her feet and drew her weapon. “Sir! I need you to come out where I can see you.” She pulled her flashlight up and began to scan the treeline for the man. She could hear noises of the man, grunting and yelling, but he was hidden from view. She made her way into the woods, following the sounds, but soon she was fearful. The man’s voice was distorted, it sounded deep, almost like a growl. She tripped over a small branch and while getting up noticed a torn shirt, the same one the man was wearing, only it looked as if it had been ripped to shreds by an animal attack.
Maria began to scan the area, trying to figure out which direction the road was in when she heard a paralyzing wolf howl. It sounded like it was only twenty or thirty feet away. He hands were shaking as she slowly took a step back. She could hear movement to her left, then on her right, her whole body trembling now. She heard a branch snap behind her and turn sharply to see a large creature, nearly eight feet tall, it looked like a wolf but walked on two legs. It’s fangs were shining in the light of the flashlight. Maria couldn’t even breathe, she stood motionless and the creature did as well. The creature snarled and leaped towards her, she couldn’t react, she was petrified with fear as the beast lounged and sunk it’s teeth into already bloodied shoulder. There was no way she could fight it, she was five foot seven on a good day and maybe one hundred and forty pounds. She cried out, snapped out of her trance her training kicked in and she fired her gun from the hip, point blank into the creature. It released her shoulder and howled in pain as she kept firing until her magazine was empty. The beast grunted and then collapsed on the ground next to her.
Maria lay on the ground for a good five minutes before she broke down crying. After a time she crawled to her hands and knees and grabbed her flashlight. She stumbled her way out of the woods and found the cars down the road. She quickly called in the incident and requested backup and an ambulance. It was the better part of an hour before anyone else arrived to the remote scene. She explained the situation to the officers that arrived and they sent a few men into the trees to recover the animal that had attacked her and try and find the young man. Twenty minutes later the other officers came back saying all they could find was the corpse of the man, riddled with bullet holes and completely nude.
“Detective, we couldn’t find any signs of an animal in there, just him.” One of the officers said.
“No, listen, there was a huge wolf thing there, I shot that when it was attacking me. I nearly died. I mean, look at this wound!” She pulled down the collar of her shirt to show her shoulder, but the wound was nearly gone, there was some redness and it was tender, but it was nearly healed. “What? No, that’s not possible...” The officers on the scene exchanged questioning looks. “I’m telling you there was a huge wolf creature that attacked me!”
“Why don’t I drive you back to town Detective. These guys can handle the scene and we’ll investigate more of the area in the morning. Jerry call CSI and the coroner.” One of the officers began dictating orders. Maria felt lost, there was a wolf, she had been bitten, right? She climbed into the squad car and started to sob again as the Officer drove her back into town.

The next morning, Maria was in the interview room with the Captain and another Detective. The ceiling fan the the center of the room spinning almost painfully slow. Maria held her shoulder, the pain was, according to the doctors, in her head, but it ached awfully and she wished anyone would believe her and give her something to dull the pain.
“Detective Lopez, er, Maria. Detective Waterson has investigated the scene from last night, and it is his conclusion that you were the victim of an assault.” The Captain said. The young man, Derek Waterson, stepped forward and gave a short nod to Maria before sitting down.
“Yes sir, as I said in my report, there was a large creature or something, it attacked me.” Maria affirmed.
“Maria,” Waterson chimed in, “There was no evidence of anything other than that guy.” He explained. “As far as we can tell, he led you in the woods, he stripped and then jumped you. We haven’t found anything to point to motive or intent yet, but we are working on it.”
“I’m not crazy.” Maria defended, “I know what I saw.”
“No one is saying you are crazy, but procedure does dictate that we have you speak to the retained psychologist, Dr. Werner.”
“I don’t need some shrink to tell me I’m nuts.”
“Don’t fight me on this Maria, the only other option would be to make it an order and put you behind a desk, and I can’t afford to do that. We need you in the field.”
“Sir, I really don’t...”
“Detective Lopez, I am telling you to go talk about this with Dr. Werner, I don’t want to make this an order but I will if I have to!” Maria straightened up as the Captain yelled.
“Yes Sir! Sorry Sir, I will.” Maria replied. Waterson stood up and threw on his sport coat.
“And I will be out trying to dig up anything on the assailant.” Derek said as her headed for the door.
“Let me know if you find out anything.” Maria asked as her left. He gave a small wave or acknowledgment.
“Now Maria, you have an appointment upstairs.” The Captain gave her a reassuring pat on the shoulder as she stood up and grabbed her jacket.
Maria made her way to the stairs but detoured to the bathroom before hand. She waited until she knew the bathroom was empty before taking a deep breath and splashing her face with water. She glanced down at her shoulder, the pain still ached as she popped another few pain pills to try and deal with it. She decided she may as well pee while she had the chance as well. She opened a stall and sat down as the door opened and two other officers came in the room. The heavy wooden door closed as they started to gossip about fellow officers, today’s topic was the crazy Detective who thought she killed a monster. Maria stayed as quiet as she could as they laughed and mocked her. She wasn’t crazy. She knew what she saw. Just recalling it made her hands shake and tremble. Maria finished her business and stood up flushing and opening the door to the surprise of the two young officers.
“And then what happened?” Maria asked in a clearly annoyed tone.
“Sorry Ma’am!” One of the officers blurted out as she hurriedly left the room followed quickly by the other. Maria sneered at them as they passed. She had the right, couple of lazy gossips had no right to talk smack about her. She washed her hands quickly, still mad about nothing in particular. She reached for the paper towel dispenser and bent a nail back as she did, she yelled loudly and then proceeded to punch the dispenser, then kick the trashcan, then punch a mirror, all the while yelling and screaming frantically. Soon there was s crowd at the door. Including the Captain.
“Lopez! Werner! Now!” The Captain’s voice echoed loudly in the small tiled room as Maria jumped and rushed to the door, trying to fight her way past the gathered officers as they stared at the destruction in her wake. She ran up the stairs to the human resources part of the building and knocked on the door of Dr. Claudia Werner, a woman in her mid-forties. She had a stout round build, she reminded Maria of a stereotypical mom type person. Always friendly looking, like she wants to give you a hug and offer you a sandwich. Maria heard Dr. Werner calling from inside her office and she opened to door.
“Maria, how are you doing?” Dr. Werner asked as she opened the door and entered the room, gently closing the door behind her.
“I assume you already know the answer so let’s skip the foreplay, doc.” Maria replied curtly. She almost felt bad after she saw the look on Dr. Werner’s face was similar to a puppy’s that you just told you hate it. “Sorry, I’m not having a great day.”
“So I’ve been told. You were attacked by a monster last night.” Dr Werner clicked her pen and jotted down some notes. Maria walked to the seat across from her and sat down.
“You think I am crazy too?” Maria asked as she slumped in the cushioned chair sinking deep into the warm fabric.
“Honey, we are law officers, and we chose that. I think you, me, and everyone else in this building are certifiable. Regardless of what you saw, you were attacked by a monster. Any person who would attack another is a monster, the only real monsters in my opinion.” Maria sat and listened with her brow furrowed and face in a frown. “Let’s talk about what last night. What is the first thing you recall about the incident?” Dr. Werner readied her pen.
“I remember driving back from meeting an informant. I saw a car driving erratically and way too fast. I whipped around and pulled them over. Once I got to the window of the car I got a look at the driver, he was a kid, he looked freaked out, or maybe high on something. He was distressed and his behavior appeared to be seizure like, so I tried to help him out of the car, and he attacked me. He grabbed my shoulder and ripped my jacket and cut me, before running off into the woods.”
“I see, please, continue.” Dr. Werner noted all the highlights of her story as she spoke.
“I followed him into the trees to apprehend him and make sure he didn’t hurt himself or anyone else. I heard some noises, and then I was attacked again by, what looked like, ugh, you are gonna think I’m nuts.”
“What did you see Maria.”
“It looked like a werewolf. Big hairy, two legs, arms, fangs, the whole shebang.”
“I don’t think you are nuts.”
“Thanks for the vote of confidence. Anyway, It attacked me, pinning me down, I had my weapon drawn, I fired, the end. Other officers arrived later and told me that I killed the guy I had pulled over. Which lends itself to my werewolf theory.” Maria sighed as she finished.
“That was a very detailed debriefing, now, how did all that make you feel?” Dr. Werner asked.
“What?”
“How did it make you feel, were you exhilarated? Scared? hungry? What?”
“I was terrified, it was like, twice my size and also impossibly fictitious. I am pretty sure you would feel similarly living in a Grimm fairy tale.”
“I get it, Maria, I do. Take a deep breath for me.” Dr Werner waited as Maria inhaled and exhaled slowly. “I want to address the elephant in the room first. As you said, werewolves aren’t real. So you probably didn’t see a werewolf.” Maria grimaced, she thought she was crazy like the rest of them, she knew she would, she probably was crazy. “I don’t however doubt that you recall seeing one.” Maria was confused and was about to ask a question but a slight gesture from Dr. Werner stopped her. “You had a traumatic experience. Most likely it was a prelude to a sexual assault. You know how damaging that can be to a person, you’ve seen it first hand. I believe that what you saw, or rather, what your brain recalls, was a large, imposing creature that could easily overpower you, to cope with what happened, a depraved man stripped naked and tried to rape you. You created the werewolf to dehumanize him and to protect your psyche from the truth of the experience.”
“You think I made it up?” Maria asked defensively.
“I think your mind made up a story for you to protect you, yes. I think you saw exactly what you think you saw, but I think it was a fabrication, yes.” Dr. Werner continued to write while she spoke.
“So where do we go from here?” Maria asked sitting up.
“Well, I’d like to have a few more sessions with you. I am also going to give you a prescription for a mild sedative. It should help you relax and get to sleep easier. I usually prescribe it for any officer that has been involved in a fatal shooting or has symptoms of PTSD. I suggest getting some R&R. Take a couple days off. Come back to work when you are ready. I’ll see you tomorrow for another session.” Dr. Werner handed her a prescription and gave her a friendly hug before Maria headed out the door and made her way out of the building. The glances and whispers of her fellow officers was unnerving as she walked through the building. She could hear all the under-breath comments near silent snickers as if she was standing next to them. It made me mad but she kept walking. She opened the front door and cringed and covered her ears as the loud noise of the street was painful, after a second her ears adjusted and she moved her hands. She walked down the street towards the pharmacy. The soft glow of the setting sun filtered between buildings as she walked. The pharmacy was right near her apartment which made it convenient for situations exactly like this.
She handed the prescription to the young girl behind the glass and fifteen minutes later Maria was being handed a bottle that rattled with medication. The ride up the elevator was long as she lived on the 5th floor of an apartment building. It had a great view though, worth the extra time in the cramped, metal death-box. Her apartment greeted her as it always had, well decorated but empty. It was a constant reminder that she had no one to share her life with. She sighed as she set her handbag down and grabbed some food out of the fridge. She scarfed down the leftovers but she could help but feel like they might have been bad, the taste was off, but she let it go and rinsed her dishes and took on of the pills the Doctor had prescribed and went to her room. She pulled off her shirt and her bra, and looked at her shoulder, for some reason is hurt more. She gently rubbed it as she walked to the window, the sun was set now and the moon was rising up over the buildings. She was getting a headache and feeling a bit warm. Maybe that food was bad, she thought as she crawled into bed.
