Wesninski
Nathan Wesninsky 💋
"Family"
Once upon a time, as I was blabbering about AFTG to my little sister (as we all are want to do), she asked me a question.
I’ve thought about this question for weeks now, and I think I’m finally able to answer it.
The question was this: If Nathan chased Neil for as long as he did, does that mean that part of him loved his son? And also, did Mary love him?
Regarding Nathan, the short answer is no.
The long answer is, define Neil. Is Neil his potential? If so, the answer is yes. Is Neil his legacy? Then yes.
Nathan never loved his son, but he did love all the things that having a son would mean for his empire. He loved having an heir. He loved shaping a little boy into the perfect killing machine. He loved the way a knife looked gripped in a hand that was not yet large enough to hold it properly. He loved the high-pitched sound of a little boy’s screams; they meant lessons learned, mistakes that would never be repeated.
Nathan loved Neil’s usefulness, but a man like that could never truly love his son.
And Mary?
Mary loved Neil, in as much as a woman like her could love anything. She sacrificed her world, her tentative safety, and her life for him. To protect him.
She kept him alive, dragged him from city to city, country to country. She gave everything she had to give her son just a few more days.
Mary Hatford loved her son, and she despised him. He was slowing her down. He was a child who didn’t listen, who took risks he shouldn’t take. Mary hated him. He was the reason they had to run in the first place. He looked just like his father.
Mary had no kind words for her son as she was dying. She couldn’t tell him how much she loved him, and she couldn’t tell him how unendingly angry she was. What she could do was tell him what to do next. Tell him how to stay alive.
Nathan Wesninski loved having a legacy, but hated having a son. Mary Hatford loved her son, but hated taking care of him
So in the end, the answer is no. Neither of Neil’s parents loved him. They each loved some part of him, but not him.
What if
HC with Neil's family or Nathan's fam background ?
The Wesninski’s were wealthy people, residing in upstate New York, that owned a lot of land and factories that supplied weapons around the northeast. They had no ties to the Moriyama’s- they were more powerful than the smaller New York business. They knew of each other and were aware of what each family was a part of, but their paths never crossed and both parties respected that boundary. The Wesninski’s were not violent, but they knew their audience, so they also knew their way around their guns and fists just as a precaution. They were a very close knit family, but they weren’t the softest of people, so to speak. They kind of couldn’t be.
They had a strong Welsh background with a tad of Hungarian relation- Nathan’s father, Simon Wesninski, was born in Wales to Welsh and Irish parents. They moved to the US when he was a boy and Simon took over the family business when he was of age.
Simon Wesninski’s wife, Nathan’s mother, was Amira Banko. She was born in the US to Hungarian immigrants. Her parents were close with Simon’s, so they spent a lot of time together and dated in school. They get married two years after they graduate.
In my mind, for some reason Nathan has 5 siblings excluding himself. Don’t ask why. Idk.
He is the 4th born out of the 6. It goes like this: Darren, Gareth, Oliver, Nathan, Zoe, Harry. Darren and Gareth take over the family business with Oliver on the financial side, and Nathan eventually joins his brothers.
Nathan gets a few years in before he starts going against his brother’s orders/wishes in regards to client orders and such. He gets mixed into the Moriyama’s, and is therefore dropped from the business. The Wesninski’s don’t want that type of involvement.
Nathan doesn’t like this. He goes on an angry tantrum- he’s always been the hot headed one of his siblings, he’s got a temper issue. He gets involved with the Moriyama’s anyway, and moves to Baltimore where he then marries Mary.
I feel like Simon, while older, sends a letter stating that Nathan has acted out and is no longer part of their business. He doesn’t want to be involved in anything Nathan does with/for the Moriyama’s. He claims to be involved with your family, we hope things go well. However in the event that he proves to be a problem, please note that it is not at our hand. We know you are strict- as you should be. Please disregard the Wesninski family of any punishment for his doing.
His siblings and mother visit (his father is out of shape to be traveling by then) a few times in the few years following (mainly to make sure he was okay), but of course we see how Nathan turns out. His siblings were the first to realize that they wanted nothing to do with their brother and promptly cut him off. Zoe tried getting in touch with Mary to let her know that they would help her and Nathaniel if needed, but the message never reaches and none of them know how had Mary and Nathaniel have it to be willing to cross Moriyama lines. The rest is history as what we know from the books.
Like I said, Darren and Gareth Wesninski take over the family business after their father decides to retire and help from the sidelines. It goes smoothly; again, they’re a close knit family. Oliver is on the financial side of things. Nathan is Nathan a horrible human being. Zoe doesn’t care for the business, she becomes a hairdresser instead. Harold, or Harry as they call him, goes to school to be a professor at a University in DC (he relocates to University of South Carolina when The Butcher starts becoming a familiar name. He doesn’t want that kind of recognition for his good name).
I know Nora would probably shoot that all down but IDC. I know he probably didn't have siblings and that the Wesninski’s were probably just a middle class family with a fucked up kid but it’s fun to think up what if’s and create backgrounds and little stories idk.
next post!!
I remember this one time in summer, I celebrated my birthday with my family and all was well.
Out of nowhere my cousin calls his son junior and I think in that moment I had a thousand mile stare.
Like, can this book series leave me alone for like one second?
Have we ever talked as a fandom about wtf Kevin Day thought when he legit watched a man cut into pieces by a redheaded mob enforcer after Exy practice one day? because like. I feel like maybe we should.
Like here's little!Kevin and his bestie/bro!Riko and this small other kid and they go upstairs after playing and maybe KDay is like *is it time for a Gatorade* but no INSTEAD IT IS TIME FOR MURDER
