ghost of west pier
Ch214; the hotel and surroundings, plus Fairchild
As I've said before (back in June 2024), The Nectar Springs is based on The Grand Brighton. And West Pier was a big attraction back then.
But what about the Fairchild Conglomerate and Merry Ocean Pier?
Merry Ocean Pier, east of West Pier, was an easy one: It's Brighton Palace Pier. A slight anachronism, though, since it didn't really open until 1899, a decade after the events of this arc.
The rides have been updated, but this is it. It really is just a bit east of West Pier, too.
(Side note: if the Victorian era had had cat cafés like today, Sebastian probably wouldn't have minded so much the idea of being relieved of his duties for a while. 😂)
The Fairchild Conglomerate is harder to pin down. There was a popular trilogy of books for teaching (evangelical Anglican) morals to children, titled The History of the Fairchild Family, but it slowly fell out of favor as it was replaced with more modern views and more contemporary authors. Mary Martha Sherwood was deeply religious... and quite racist, as shown in two even earlier books about children who relied on their Indian caretakers. If there is any influence of these works on Yana-san, it would likely only be in the surname of the family.
I'm still looking for any historical reference for our Barnabus Fairchild III, who has gained the title of baron through generations of accumulated wealth and shrewd business dealings.
Ideas about him?
Ink and watercolor sketch of the old West Pier in Brighton.
On location for the sketch:
It's been gradually falling into ruins since it closed in 1975, greatly accelerated by storms and arson in the early 2000s. Now only the bones remain, ribs picked clean by time and the sun. I'm chewing on the decay of it.
Was such a fab spot and a beautiful day for it.

Looking west through the West Pier
Everything Everywhere All at Once
Absolutely excellent movie, with a title to be taken quite literally with its constant information and sensory overload, which is also a rather accurate depiction of neurodivergences.
Plus a random appearance of the Brighton's West Pier!
