So nice, rough, raw, unedited tapes West Papua. Love the sound and the content. Feels like i went to a yard sale, and found these reels. The A side of this reel contains female vocals, singing ritual & ceremonial songs. To me it sounds all very African. The tape-hiss and soft crackles give it even more organic feel.

(Pace Sound Reporters) - Band 5 Diversen Kant A (1963-1964)

A tape which is called diversen (= various) on the cover and contains a ritual or ceremony with women singing on the A side and men on the B side. The tape was recorded by Herman Peters OFM in the Baliem Valley in West Papua for his anthropological research that resulted in his thesis “Enkele hoofdstukken uit het sociaal-religieuze leven van een Dani-groep” published Dekker en van de Vegt, Utrecht, 1965. It was probably recorded in 1963-1964. Many songs but not all are terminated before their end. A habit not unusual when one had limited access to tapes and electricity.
