Strolling through the streets of Portland one last time, contemplating and delaying our way back to the hostel. Ergo our inevitable departure. We hear the distant sound of covers of our favourite classic rock. Lo and behold it's a family band with perhaps the world's smallest bassist! I need to find out who these guys are they were incredible! They had such a wide range, including punk, metal and spanning about four decades of head bangin defining music. Presenting the world's smallest park! At twenty-four inches in diameter and 452.16 square inches, Mills End Park was added to the Guinness Book of World Records. It was created by a local journalist Dick Fagen who was tired of looking at a pole hole in the middle of the street. He had a column in the Oregon Journal called 'Mills End', in which he described various events that occurred in the park. These often involved leprechauns and other fantastical tales with regular characters such as Patrick O'Toole. On the walking tour of Portland, we were told that Matt Groening grew up here. He went to school "down the road" in a different suburb. In true roadtrip fashion, neither of us had any money. This meant no fancy hotels, no seedy motels and, only the odd night in a hostel just for the purpose of a shower and perhaps to meet some "normal" people to socialise with (thanks @aliem!). So we had an airbed that fitted perfectly in the back of the car and became incredibly proficient at prioritising space, whilst enabling a quick getaway if we were caught kipping anywhere we shouldn't! This meant that most nights on the roadtrip we were able to settle down and enjoy views like this. Absolutely perfect. Most nights we just drove until we found a suitable spot, but this beach we'd actually sought out on purpose. We got there with enough daylight to set ourselves up, time to get a fire going to cook burgers and s'mores and time to take in this glorious west coast sunset. Buenos noches, one and all!
