that's not phones bad, it's "community good, huge apps bad"
there's a reason i don't touch apps for organising that kind of thing, it hasn't really penetrated in NZ outside like. Auckland.
Yeah... in USA cities there is such an overwhelming amount of different people to call that it can be difficult or hard to know who would be best, or who comes recommended, so any simplification to the process when you don’t know anyone for a job in the community bet can look appealing. Apps like Handy or Grubhub exploit that. I used Handy before because it made things easier when I had just moved here and I didn’t know any places to ask questions
Ironically the message board I used was also via an app/social media site, Nextdoor-- because between that and facebook that’s where this sort of discussion has fled to after web 2.0 really annihilated many city and town e-mailing lists or old fashioned message boards/forums. It was difficult to find where that stuff had gone when I first moved cities! Who knows where it will flee to when those venues go under eventually...
