Happy 17th Birthday To Marley Dias!! 🥳🎉 Please show some L♥️ve for activist and writer, @MarleyDias ✨✨ Marley launched a campaign called #1000BlackGirlBooks in November 2015, when she was in elementary school; she noticed that the main protagonist in most stories was a white boy. #Philadelphia #WestOrange #NewJersey #GrassROOTSCommunityFoundation #MarleyDiasGetsItDoneAndSoCanYou! #GirlsCanDoprogram. #BookmarksCelebratingBlackVoices When Dias was age 11, she complained to her mother that all of her mandatory readings were books about white boys and dogs. She said, "There wasn't really any freedom for me to read what I wanted." After speaking with her mother, Dias decided to start a book drive, #1000BlackGirlBooks, to bring more attention to literature featuring black female protagonists, with the goal to collect 1,000 books to donate for black girls to other schools. The book drive focuses specifically on books in which black girls are the main characters, not minor or background characters. Within a few months, more than 9,000 books were collected. Many of these books have been sent to a children's book drive in Jamaica. She’s also a host and executive producer of Netflix’s Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices. The live-action series is similar to the iconic Reading Rainbow. It features celebrities reading book by Black authors to children and leading discussions about empathy, equality, self-love and antiracism, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “Netflix reached out and really pitched the project to me. I was immediately excited because I know that [it’s] obviously an opportunity to host, but especially to host something that I cared so passionately about,” Marley said. “They know that I care about the books that are being told and I recommend some of these books to people all the time.
