was     it     fate     that     led     them     here     ?     was     it     their    own     past     wrongdoings     ?      he     tried     many     times     to    find    an     answer     to     these     questions     ,     always     coming    up     short     .     didn’t     matter     either     way     ,    did     it     ?     the     law     has     already     made     up     its     mind      .          “     ...     i     know    the     feeling     .     sometimes     it     feels     like     this     is     all     i      have     .     THIS     GANG    ,     robbin’     and     shootin’     folk     .     don’t     know     what     i’d      do     if     i     left     .     don’t      know     where     i’d     go     .     ”          he     knows     his     father     never    wanted     this     future     for     him     .     he     knows     he     took     it     upon     himself     to     prevent     such    a     future     .     but     even     with    all    that     education     and      wisdom     ,     it     couldn’t     save     him     from    a    BULLET     AND     AN     EARLY     GRAVE     .     couldn’t     save     him      from     the     cruelty     of     bad     men     .     that     makes     lenny     wonder     .          “     you     got     any     family     out     there     ,     jenny     ?     ”

     the term sloshed had never quite made sense to him; drunkenness never felt like he was liquid, more that everything was coated in a layer of grease and thus easily slipped from his grasp, be it his glass, his gun, or . . . the hours spent in a bar.

     but drunkenness during the day is a very different beast, and he a very different man. drinking to forget, to cope - everything around him feels like water, rippling around him so much so that if he stares at the grass waving in the gentle breeze too much he begins to feel almost dizzy.

     the only refuge he finds on this sea of sorrows and green comes in the form of a stump, a seat turned life raft in the warm afternoon sun. feet somehow carry him ( in an albeit strange, stumbling pattern ) to plop down hard on the stump, the man uttering a slight grunt, which then elongates into a groan as he notices the other nearest to him.

     𝚒𝚝'𝚜 𝚊 𝚜𝚘𝚏𝚝 𝚝𝚘𝚗𝚎,    as    he    picks    at    the    fire    flickering    &&    chattering    away    before    them .    his    gaze    is    fixated    on    the    monarch    orange    flankers    that    cascade    into    the    nights    aura    with    the    blackened    smoke,    dark    irises    drifting    toward    miss    queen    only    for    a    brief    moment .    he’s    settled    on    a    bedroll,    an    elbow    propped    up    on    his    knee    &&    a    half    burnt    cigarette    held    casually    within    vacant    fingers .    his    other    adorns    a    girthy    stick,    jabbing    idly    at    the    charred    wood    he    placed    atop    the    flames    some    time    ago .         

      he’d    be    lying    if    he    said    he    was    expecting    her    to    actually    come    along    with    him    earlier    that    morn .    of    course,    he’s    bold    enough    to    believe    he    can    handle    such    case    on    his    own,    but,    to    have    an    informant    like    herself    who    has    relations    to    such,    &&    offers    a    similar    disdain    as    he    ---    it    was    something    of    a    miracle    considering    his    associate    wasn’t     at     hand .      the    least    he    could    do    to    show    his    ‘appreciation’    was    to    offer    her    the    tent    he    purchased    on    their    way    out    of    town .    

              〝     the    cold    is    the    least    of    my    worries .    besides,    thought    you    might    need    the    privacy    more    than    i    do,    miss .    〞

     he    offers    something    similar    to    that    of    a    genuine    grin,    though     his    lips    return    to    their    vacant    state    as    the    cigarette    is    brought    to    his    mouth;    a    cancerous    stream    of    smoke    bellowing    through    his    nostrils .    the    detective    casts    another    quick    glance    her    way,    cigarette    eventually    passed    in    her    direction .
