Jem stared wistfully out at the Atlantic Ocean before him, the eastern coast of the United States one of their many pit-stops for their innumerable journeys together ahead. His toes dug deep into the wet sand as he listened to her without looking up. He had been stagnant in the Silent Brotherhood for so long that good and evil were such distant concepts to him for over a century. He had seen the horrors of mundane wars and what his fellow brethren of the Circle were capable of, but he had also seen the light. He was present for the births of children, for the unions of marriage, and the bonds of parabatai forged by runes, vows, and a love that transcended life and death. Perhaps there was good in everyone, but there, too, was choice. All had the choice of which side to embrace in the primal warring factions of good and evil.
“I believe you are.” Jem quietly admitted, though the crashing waves competed with his voice.
If it weren’t for the softness of his tone, Tessa might have smiled with relief. Yet, she could not deny his mind had wandered somewhere far away and she wasn’t taking that journey with him. Moving closer, she rested her head on his shoulder as she peered up at him from the corner of her eye. “What’s on your mind?”
