The entire life of a photo, it owes to the light.
Anyone who has ever owned a traditional film camera understands that light has an effect on the surface of the camera’s film. When the shutter opens, it allows light to enter the camera. The lens reflects the image directly onto the film and the reflected image tells the film how to record the light that came through the open shutter.
Although many things that have to happen inside of a camera for an image to be reflected, without light the photograph wouldn’t even be possible.
The entire life of a photo, it owes to the light.
For the first week of our film photography club, we left our digital cameras at home to discuss the discovery and history of photography through light.
We talked about the simplicity of the pinhole camera with its nearly infinitesimal opening - effectively a light proof box with a pinhole sized aperture and manual shutter to block and allow light.
We discussed the discovery of light sensitive chemicals and created blue photogram cyanotypes with light sensitive chemicals, watercolor paper, found objects from the backyard, and natural sunlight. We watched the sunlight expose the cyanotype chemicals and illustrate the basics of capturing and reflecting light in a camera.
Since it is winter in the PNW, the light was very weak so the full exposure took about 48 hours. I’m going to give ‘em a second bath later today and see if we can get some of the left-over yellow chemical to wash away so we’re left with cyan blue and white.
