They tried so hard to drill escape routes into elementary children’s heads, but they could only do so much. It was easy to think in a brightly lit classroom, giggling with your friends as you practiced crawling across the floor beneath imaginary smoke, squealing in pretend horror as you made it to the fire fighter crouched in the doorway, his full face respirator mask hiding the features that made him familiar to you.

For living on an island that faced disaster almost daily, nothing ever chilled him to the core more than hearing a family member screaming “THEY’RE STILL INSIDE!!”

Hunter’s respirator hissed softly, echoing the hiss of steam rising behind him, a byproduct of Kade’s efforts to keep his exit route open. Smoke rolled along the ceiling, obscuring it from view as he moved along the hallway trying to think like a terrified eight year old. Where would she go? What would she do? Where did she feel the safest?

The sudden crunch of glass beneath his boot startled him into taking a step back. He studied the contents of the framed picture for a split second before carefully pushing open the closed door of the master bedroom.

@wh4tssh4kinb4kin! I can't remember if we've ever interacted yet but I've had a fun time reading your interactions with Heatwave. I also died inside at the assassin joke Kade made (I don't know if you remember it anymore ;;;) and I was so torn if I should leave a comment or not about how incredibly funny it was so I'm using this moment to bring this finally up lol
