"Did I sit in something, Heatwave?" Optimus is trying his best to look, but with a frame type as large as his, it's hard to check himself.
“Yup.”
The firebot shifts his own frame so he’s back to back with the Prime while discreetly passing him a damp cloth. “Guess we missed a gel or two when we were cleaning up earlier.” He lowered his voice to a near whisper. “Left side, aft and thigh.”
Primus. How embarrassing.
"Thank you." Optimus murmurs back, taking the rag and trying to discreetly rub away at the spot with the hope that no one else has noticed.
"I hope it wasn't there for long. I wish someone had told me sooner."
“If it makes you feel any better, I was right behind you for the walk from the mess hall and I didn’t see anything until the lighting changed when we got out here…”
Heatwave took the cloth and quickly swiped away an errant streak of glowy blue that Optimus had missed.
“That passageway is dark as the pit by the way, engineering run out of lamps again?”

Hunter’s stretched out on the back porch swing enjoying the tranquility of being at home after the noise and chaos of watching over the crowd at last night’s show.
Taking a short swig from the bottle in his hand, he smiled at the sound of the door opening, but found the idea of sitting up a little too daunting at the moment.
“Hey handsome, there’s watermelon on the table,” he gestured vaguely to the wobbly little piece of outdoor furniture that had somehow managed to follow him from his apartment into his new life. “And beer in the cooler.”
Since Hunter had to work the previous night, Colt got a little rowdy with the other Jarheads back on base. You know how the Crayola chompers get when they're free to light shit up on purpose. Pausing at the backdoor, he couldn't help but smile as he just watched Hunter for just a few moments before heading out to join him.
Hey handsome... there's watermelon on the table... and beer in the cooler.
"Yer too good ta me. Ya know that, right?"
Bending down at the waist to kiss the relaxing firefighter on the cheek, the Sergeant is quick to grab a cold one before lighting up a cigarette and plopping himself down in an adjacent chair. His baby blues watch as their 4-legged children frolic about the yard. Wesson was currently in the cone of shame. The hound had managed to break his tail by wagging too voraciously and smacking it on the doorframe.
"So... Ah've got some news." He paused a moment to take a drag before continuing on. "In case we get approved, Ah've requested an assignment change. Local high school was lookin' fer a instructor for their JROTC program. Interviewed with tha district. Don't know if Ah got it, but figured it would be helpful in transitionin' to a role that keeps me here. In case we get approved."
Taking his partner's hand into his own, he kisses the tops of his knuckles.
"Rough night last night?"
“Well, you do deserve the best I can give you… All of you do.”
Hunter looked out at their little pack. Wes was laying in the shade, clearly pouting about his predicament, but Blaze and Smith were having a rollicking good time playing tug of war with a toy that had been advertised as indestructible. They’d see about that.
Colt’s voice drew the firefighter’s attention back to the porch. “Some of the band kids were talking about Mr. Ironside leaving the post. Depending on which rumor mill one is plugged into, he’s either going back into active service for the CIA, going undercover as a spy for the FBI, or he’s just switching districts to be closer to his family…” Hunter chuckled and swirled the contents of his bottle before taking another sip. “Frankly, I’m inclined to believe the CIA story.”
His amused smile warmed, “I really hope you do get the job, having you close and safe would mean the world, especially if we get approved.”
The kiss to his knuckles sent a pleasant tingle up his spine, Colt’s affectionate gestures always affected Hunter like that. Moving his hand to brush his fingers along the sergeant’s strong jaw, Hunter considered the previous night.
“Doused a few illegal fires… and Kade… purely accidental, of course. Helped some kids light their sparklers and Roman candles, put out a grease fire in one of the food trucks, had to hose down a van when a sparkler got dropped between the back bumper and the van’s body, had some food truck tacos, gave out stickers and plastic fire helmets, played rock-paper-scissors with Kade to see who’d go answer Mrs. Neederlander’s inevitable call, then a kid got spooked when his Roman candle turned out to be one of those whistling ones, he dropped it while the fireballs were still shooting out and they ended up setting someone’s tent canopy on fire…. So yeah, kind of a mixture of smooth moments and rough ones.”
Taking a swig from the bottle, his thumb peels at the corner of the label as Hunter talks about who he might potentially be replacing. "CIA? Pffffft... overpaid rent-a-cops more like. Ah'm jus' playin'. Ain't got no qualms with tha feds - 'cause Ah know yer listenin'!" He jokingly raises his voice as if their little piece of paradise is bugged.
"Yeah, Ah'm hopin' former operative turned cop turned decorated war hero helps mah case. Though Ah don't got tha education background; jus' years of Uncle Sam kickin' mah ass." Chuckling, he takes a swig of his beer and the last draw from his cig before it gets ashed. "Ah'd do damn near anythin' ta help our chances."
He listens intently as Hunter replays the events of the prior evening. The only part that sounded even remotely enjoyable was the tacos. The world definitely needed more people like Hunter. "Well damn Shug, sounds like ya need a good back rub. Why don't we step inside and Ah'll treat ya to one? S' tha least Ah can do."
Colt doesn't even wait for a reply. He's standing up to toss his empty bottle into the recycling bin before whistling for the mass of dogmanity to go back inside. Grabbing the bowl of watermelon, he's quick to toss a cube into the air to land squarely in his open maw.
"Ya comin'?"
Hunter snorted and reached for a chunk of watermelon.“Well I do hope they turn their listening devices off on nights when we’re both home, otherwise they’ve been getting quite an earful... For free no less.”
He dropped his mock offense and gingerly sat up, arching his back and throwing his arms up over his head in a languid stretch. “A back rub sounds amazing, not as amazing as you, of course, but I’m still ranking it pretty high.”
Draining his beer, the firefighter applauded his husband’s athletic feat with the piece of watermelon then pushed himself to his feet and took a few steps forward, then a giant step back as their pack of pups barreled past him in a race to make it through the door first.
Ya comin’?
That question brought a full fledged grin to Hunter’s lips. “Not yet, but the evening is still young.” Lobbing his bottle into the recycling bin, he followed the dogs into the house, stripping off his shirt and shoes as he went. “I want to hear about your evening too, by the way.” Crawling up onto their bed, Hunter flopped down on his stomach. “Blow up anything expensive?”
Ohhhh, she'd done something really bad this time, but she wasn't sure what. She had just discovered that morning a small, mysterious pipe of some kind built into her digit when she opened the tip. She didn't even know she could do that! Something hot and bright and painful had flashed out, startling her and making her tumble back in the grass.
Then the light showed up on the grass and got bigger. And bigger. And hotter! Soon it was everywhere and the animals were running away from it wherever they could and the air was hot and stingy and the little bot could only think to scramble up into a tall tree.
Hiding in trees had saved her many times before. Her danger lights blinked and her little frame shook, but she clung to the trunk and waited for it all to pass. The fire couldn't reach her here...
It was way too hot for something as uncomfortable as a forest fire. Siren already screaming, Heatwave honked his horn at the idiots who’d stopped their vehicles right there in the road to take photos and videos of the blazing trees.
Now angry, the firebot transformed and activated his knuckle dusters, dousing the people standing by their vehicles before aiming the flow at the base of the trees.
The disgruntled mutterings faded to silence behind him as he moved deeper into the forest. Slipping carefully between ancient lofty giants and younger, smaller specimens, he hosed down the perimeter of the fire. Luckily, it wasn’t as widespread as he’d first feared, but the wind was beginning to pick up, which meant he needed to get this thing knocked down fast.
As he stepped into a clearing, a flash of bright white in one of the trees across the way caught his optic. The firebot doused the flames creeping up the trunk of that tree before turning his attention to the ones surrounding it on three sides.
Finally, the fire was out and Heatwave stood alone beside the steaming tree where he’d first caught sight of…. whatever was up there among the still green leaves.
“Hello? Anyone there?”
Would you love me….

So yeah, kind of a mixture of smooth moments and rough ones.”
Heatwave’s alone at the moment, cleaning up around the bunker while keeping an audio sensor tuned to the dispatch frequency.
The last few weeks have been wild; school starting back up, emergency calls left, right, and center, and stormy weather disrupting it all.
It was a relief to settle in and actually do some ‘boring housework’ for a while.
Tetra helps with loading up her trailer as she listens to Heatwave deal with his team of Rescue Bots. She accepts the box from the mech and smiles.
"Sounds good. I will go back to town and get these delivered. I will see you all back at the firehouse." she states.
The avatar puts the last package into her trailer, which she secures, then she has it hop back into the cab and powers off toward town. She memorized all the addresses so all she has to do is look at the map to find the streets, then look for the house numbers. From there its a package at a time delivery.
Heatwave followed the tow truck back toward the center of town and pulled in at the firehouse. Once they were inside the garage, Kade called over to the hospital to make sure that Jerry was recovering and to see if they would have to make arrangements for tomorrow’s package deliveries as well.
Heatwave looked up from the datapad the was recording his report on when Kade set his phone down with a loud clack. “Well?”
The fire fighter leaned against the opposite wall, “They’re keeping him overnight for observation, but expect to be able to release him in the morning.”
“Good, and hopefully Tetra’s learning some useful information while she’s running around town…” The firebot checked his chrono. “She should be back pretty soon.”
Tetra Reris kept to the human laws and speed limits as she used the town map and planned out her delivery route to minimize the time out and about. A few children did the 'horn honk' motion at her so she happily did a short one, earning grins from them.
The storm was abating slowly and she heard from her mentor that she was returning to the ferry parking just in case she could catch a ride over before it stopped operations.
Eventually she arrives at the firehouse, disengaging her hologram while giving a single horn honk to indicate her arrival.
Hearing Tetra’s horn, Heatwave came out of the garage to meet her.
“Hey, welcome back. Did you get everything delivered alright? Any problems?”
Tetra transforms as the garage door opens and walks inside. "Everything is delivered and I had no problems thankfully. I heard from my mentor while I was out delivering. Seems the storm has abated enough the ferry is heading back to the mainland. Hope you got room for another here." she notes with a small smile.
“Glad to hear it.” Heatwave reached for the control to keep the heavy double doors partially open. The leftover breeze from the abating storm was pleasantly cool and still brisk enough to rapidly dry the garage floor.
“We’ve got plenty of space, I’m looking forward to meeting her.”
Heatwave was supposed to be resting, but instinct was driving him to clean up the room that would eventually become a nursery for the sparkling. He was making a little bit of a racket as he pushed and pulled boxes around, trying to decide on the layout of the room.
The medic has just returned from an emergency run to the hospital and hears the sound coming from one of the empty rooms in the firehouse. He approaches to see Heatwave doing a layout with boxes, "What are you up to Heatwave?" Robustus asks curiously.
"Indeed it will, but the little one isn't coming into the world that soon." he assures him softly.
Falling silent as he hears the cut off sentence. Obviously someone is contacting him. Even a pregnant lead Rescue Bot couldn't slack from his job. He keeps rubbing though and letting his warm frame relax the firebot until he gets that little smile from Heatwave.
"Adventure time dear spark?" he asks curiously.
Reluctantly drawing away from the soothing massage, Heatwave nodded to Robustus’s question.
“Yeah. Apparently a bunch of moose are blocking the mountain road and no one else is available to try and convince them to head back into the forest.”
He took the medic’s servo and headed for the lift that would take them up to the garage. “I figure if a regular vehicle horn won’t budge them, maybe some fire truck and ambulance sirens might do the trick.”
He moves his hands as his partner moves away and tells him what's going on. "Of course there is." Robustus says with a chuckle, squeezing the hand that takes his own."Well then let's get going and see if we can herd them off the road with our sirens."
Once the lift arrives to the garage, Robustus gets the garage door open and he transforms. "Never a dull moment on this island." he comments in amusement.
“Keeps things interesting for sure, both a blessing and a curse.”
Heatwave activated his siren as they left the firehouse, it was technically an emergency after all. If someone tried to get around the moose and ended up getting charged, who knew what kind of damage the rescue team would have to deal with.
Arriving at the scene, he saw several younger moose and their mothers calmly stripping fresh leaves and twigs from the trees on either side of the road. A large bull moose, however, had planted himself squarely broadside in the middle of the road and hardly reacted to the noisy approach of the two vehicles.
Adding honking to the already earsplitting cacophony only resulted in a snort and a warning stomp.
“Fine. If that’s the way he wants to play… Rob, can you back up for me? I have an idea how to get them moving, but I’ll need a little space for it.”
A soft snort escapes Rob at that phrasing. He activates his own siren and follows Heatwave to the location where the moose have set up on the road. Of course it was females with their young. Except for the male that seems to keeping watch over the rest.
"You know I got your back Heatwave. Just tell me what you plan on doing and how you want me to assist." Robustus requests.
“I know you do… I’m going to transform and scare them away from the road, all you should have to do is—“
At that point there was a loud bellow of challenge from the bull moose, apparently he’d grown tired of the ‘intruders’ and stepped toward them with his antlers lowered.
“—Hang back and make sure none of them panic and break away.”
Transforming into his dinomode, Heatwave roared back at the moose who quickly reconsidered his challenge and turned to lead his herd back into the roadside woods.
Mind you Robustus already knew that Heatwave was a triple changer so he was wondering what he had in mind by transformation and scaring the bull moose. When he takes his dino mode he stares a bit then chuckles. Their child is going to be interesting that much was for certain. He found it poetically ironic that he was part of the team that originally altered t-cogs to make triple changers and here he is bonded with one that came much later in his life.
He watches the other moose in the area and takes note that the bull decided best not to challenge the dino mode the other mech possessed.
"Effective." he notes with a soft chuckle.
“For now anyway. That’s one stubborn moose, not sure how long this trick’ll keep working on him.”
Heatwave watched until the moose herd was completely out of sight before lowering his helm to Robustus’s height. “I think Boulder is right, we really shou—“ A sudden wave of static shorted his vocoder, reducing the rest of his sentence to a threatening growl.
A low energon warning flashed across his hud screen just as his processor began to go foggy. Staggering a few steps away from the medic, the firebot put all his concentration into transforming back to bot mode before the dinosaur DNA could take over and turn him feral.
If you heard an abruptly stifled fire truck siren, no you didn’t…
“We better be talking ‘throw the controller’ level difficulty if you’re gonna nerf my creativity to ZERO.”
😢
The thought of being a co-creator was terrifying. And while he wasn't the carrier, Sire-hood was equally as daunting. He didn't regret their decision in the slightest bit. He was beyond excited about their little one, but he feared failure.
As a soldier, a member of the Elite guard, a Wrecker, a mentor, a partner... failure was not an option. Ever. But he didn't fear messing up in his other ventures. He was to be partially responsible for an entirely new life. Part of his coding would remain when he was long gone. But what if.
What if his progeny hates him, the way he hated his old mech? What if his vices mess everything up? What if he kicks the bucket too soon? He wasn't exactly a spring chicken these days... What if something horrible happens to their bitty? Or to Heatwave? He wouldn't be able to live with himself.
Cue the waterworks, it's all catching up to the old mech.
Kup very rarely cried. He doesn't like being seen as vulnerable. He'd rather get black-out drunk behind the bar, then allow others to see him as anything other than the jovial old coot he's known for being. Yet here he is, helm cradled in his servos. The last mech he'd want to see him like this... is Heatwave.
Heatwave had just come in from retrieving the mail, it was a good way to get some fresh air and exercise while still remaining close to home.
He sorted out the packages and envelopes addressed to the other occupants of the firehouse and set them aside before carrying the big box addressed to ‘The Expecting Parents’ to the bunker.
“Hey Kupcake, we’ve got mail…… Kup?” The firebot’s happy expression rapidly shifted to concern when he saw Kup hunched over and holding his helm. Tossing the box down to free his servos, Heatwave sprinted to the Gunny’s side. “What’s wrong? Are you hurt?”
[Also, sorry for the radio silence on threads. Went on vacation the 10th, came home the 15th, had a kidney stone THAT NIGHT, and got home from the ER at 2:30am the next day. Laid low for a bit, had another stone pass on Monday, and now my mother in law is spending the night tonight because she has a hospital appointment on Thursday morning and needs a hot shower before hand. (Her apartment management sucks, it’s a whole other thing we’ve been dealing with.)
Hopefully I can catch up this weekend, thanks for the infinite patience ❤️]
