“Grotesque bird” inkwell by Joseph Reinemann, from 1901
It's interesting how Akechi sees Ren's hesitation as a betrayal, meanwhile to me that hesitation was the biggest "I'd let the world burn for you" Ren could have ever dropped
What's even more interesting is that to be loved, to be cared for, to be needed, is something that Akechi craved all his life. And that's what Ren's hesitation is finally offering to him. Ren hesitates because he cares about Akechi, he loves him, in his entierty, with his crimes, flaws and pains. By hesitating, Ren shows the greatest display of affection and consideration Akechi could have ever asked for. He's hesitating to throw reality itself by the window for that guy, goddamn it !
But when facing this, when facing what he craved for so long, Akechi refuses it. Because now, more than love, Akechi needs freedom. No matter the cost. Perhaps that demonstration of love is too late too, like everything in their relationship — He's too unredeemable, he doesn't deserve to be offered such level of devotion. Perhaps he doesn't trust that this could be genuine too, since he perceives it as pity. It's too late, because Akechi now functions like it's him against the world. He needs freedom, he needs to have his own fate in his hands for once — Even if that means rejecting what he craved until now.
In the end, they both sacrificed their desire for the sake of freedom. Ren had to sacrifice Akechi for the world's freedom, and Akechi had to sacrifice his wish to be loved for his own freedom. They sacrificed their love for freedom.
