I watched this show called Greatest Hits hosted by Arsenio Hall & someone that I thought was Carrie Underwood or Kellie Pickler but is actually some girl from somewhere called Kasey Ballerini, on tv.

They do five-year intervals, and this one was 1980-1985 & had my boyfriend Rick Springfield and Kim Carnes, Kenny Loggins, Ray Parker Jr & REO Speedwagon performing on it, as well as this sort of cover of Take it on the Run sung by some guy from somewhere called Pitbull.

80s songs were everything, blaring out of my parents’ cars (thanks, parents) because we weren’t mobile yet. But we had music by ourselves, too; the world was such that we could walk around in packs of dolphin shorts & Aqua Net carrying our boom box on one shoulder. (What do you mean, “turn it off”, mean McDonald’s manager? Remember her? Super yikes!) I feel bad for today’s tweens, summer ain’t what it used to be.

And, neither is music, now that I’m old. Don’t get me wrong; I still love it, and I try (and clearly fail miserably) to keep up with what’s out there. But it’s kind of like, how every 80s song evokes a memory or feeling, that’s not really a thing anymore. The closest I get is that in the summer of 1997 the only station that came in on my shitty one -step-above-a-transistor-radio at work wax Mix 98.5 ( again, not a thing anymore…) and they played a song called How Bizarre by this band called OMC (who? Yeah I have no idea) multiple times per day & I didn’t really like the song so that was annoying.
