I trust in God, what can man do to me? (Psalm 56 Devotional)

David wrote this Psalm during a time he was seized by the Philistines. He lived a great deal of his life with people hunting for him, sometimes capturing him, and many wanting him dead. He could have existed in fear but instead his life was defined by faith and victory. How did he find strength during these times? He trusted in God and almost in a righteously snark way declared, “What can man do to me?”

He never diminished the reality that he felt fear but he revealed where he brought his fear. His fear was thrown unto God who ate that fear up with His majesty. During times of prayer to the Lord he would find himself in a sober moment of cosmic reality, “God is for me” so “what can man do to me?”

He was not denying that he could die. He just knew that if he did die he would be with God. Man would be doing him a favor. He was not denying that he could be wounded. He just knew that if he was somehow harmed that God would show him mercy though even that. He wasn’t denying there were troubles he must endure. He just knew that God would deliver him out of them all.

David endured so many troubles that he describes his sleep at night as full of “tossings”. I am sure many of us can relate to that. But through it all he acknowledges that God takes account of every tear, even measuring them (through bottle or book). Wow, what a thought God knows each tear we cry as we pursue His will for our life. What a wonderful God.

Our declaration like David should be, “ I will not be afraid!” Because my trust is in God. What do we have to fear? Jesus has conquered all our enemies, Satan, Sin, and death. What can man do to us? God is for us.
