Film: WHEN FALL IS COMING aka QUAND VIENT L'AUTOMNE (dir. François Ozon, 2024, France) and THE SHROUDS (dir. David Cronenberg, 2024, France-Canada)

Observations: For my final screening of the month, I attended a doubel bill at the Music Box. I had not planned to see the Ozon, but it was conveniently timed (in Theater 2) and are genuinely liked it, a throwback to the 1980s art cinema of my 20s (it is a Music Box release). And I was bowled over by THE SHROUDS: the protagonist's complete devotion to his dead spouse, down to practically the molecular level. His several means of keeping her present ("Hunny," "GraveTech," his affair with her sister, his dreams/hallucinations). One seldom sees such commitment to an idea so relentlessly pursued in a commercial film. And of course, the craft: some excellent performances, the Howard Shore score, the evocative sets, etc. (Plus, an extra for fans, the numerous connections to his other works, from VIDEODROME to CRASH to EXISTENZ.) I was fully absorbed from start to finish. Turn out was light for both screeings, understandable in the middle of the week.

A retiree in Burgundy, expects her grandson but a mistake ruins her plans. Her friend's son is released from prison, reviving her purpose.
There's a little bit of humour. But most of all it's a moving, complex drama that covers a lot of ground.
Ozon continues to make interesting and diverse films.
