Really fascinating to watch cultural differences in tv shows. In Israel shows people are so affectionate. So open. They are far less formal, call each other by names and esp guys are very openly touchy-feely. They pet and pat each other, hold on to each other, hug for fun out of the blue...it's very heartwarming. Esp striking with military environments like in Fauda or When heroes fly. I hear Israel has a very different approach to their military and ranks. They even address each other by the informal "you"! That would be unheard in Europe even with teachers, not military officers!

Then you watch a Swedish show like Young Wallender, and people are all cold and distant. But each look or the smallest gesture suddenly has tons of meaning. They almost unnoticeably nod to each other and if you missed that, you wouldn't have known they just made a deal or thanked each other or came to an understanding.

Really interesting how the world opens when I watch something that isn't American.

Israeli Hit Series on Netflix to be Remade for Apple, By Yakir Benzion

The Israeli action TV series “When Heroes Fly” that won rave reviews on Netflix is being remade into an American version for Apple, according to an update from the entertainment news website Hollywood Reporter.

Originally produced in 2018 by Israel’s Keshet TV network, the series won the award for the best television series at the first Canne International Series Festival in April 2018.

“When Heroes Fly” beat over nine other TV shows, including another from Israel, for the Best Series award.

That caught the attention of Netflix, and the series was upgraded into a 10-part thriller for Netflix with the dialog in Hebrew, English and Spanish with subtitles.

“When Heroes Fly” tells the tale of four friends and veterans of an IDF special forces unit — who served together in the Second Lebanon War — reuniting for one last operation aimed at finding the former lover of one of them, who happens to be the sister of another.

Non-Israeli viewers of When Heroes Fly may like to know that Himmler’s last words were mouthing “fuck the world” (כוסעמק על העולם הזה), which is, yeah, a very Himmler thing to say, but also something we just mumble sometimes when we’re shaking our heads and smiling and mean the exact opposite, so, everything considered, Dotan dies with a smile on his face and love in his heart
