Although the idea of showing up wearing a ridiculous getup was amusing, there was never any real possibility that he was going to make good on the threat. A brightly coloured Hawaiian style shirt and baggy cargo pants, accented with knee high socks and the disgusting plastic shoes that everyone seemed so obsessed with would have him sticking out as badly as an American tourist in Rome.
The last thing he needed right now was to garner any unwanted and unnecessary attention. It wasn’t easy to keep a low profile when your face was all over the news.
Years of experience had taught him that the surveillance cameras were always the first things to be disabled, but humans were getting smarter and had never lacked in the ingenuity department. Surveillance drones were so small that they were easily mistaken for something as mundane and non threatening as birds. Silent and able to produce a high definition image from yards away.
It was in his best interest to fit in. For now. Inconspicuous and at ease on a rooftop full of yuppies. It was almost incredulous in itself how they managed to eat and drink and laugh with their heads buried so deep in the sand.
His image was fashionable— both in garb and timing; while he harboured the smallest regret that he didn’t have the ability to invade her preferences so he could show up to the table with her favourite drink in hand to make up for being late.
“You couldn’t have chosen something more posh? Drinks at the white house perhaps?”
Open with humour. Non threatening. Nothing out of place. Perfectly normal.
With an ease of practiced poise and confidence, he slid into the chair at the other side of the table she had chosen for them.
“How did the presentation go? Did the Prince of England show up?”
