What makes this au different from other aus?

What a loaded question! Let's take it from the top.

A lot of this message is going to reference both authors, I'm going to write as if I'm neither to keep it coherent! Rhodey and Wolfe are the names of the authors and while they focus on different things within the AU they share full ownership of the project.

Our AU comes from wanting a place to put our OCs, Whimsical Aurora, Atlas, and Prince Gilded Eclipse into a MLP world but divorce it from the show. Originally, nothing other than it being pink pony xenofiction remained. But eventually the Goddesses were drafted, named after the show's Princesses because Wolfe pitched the idea of floating islands on either side of the map revering Celestia and Luna.

The worldbuilding grew around these three. Whimsy and Atlas belonging to Rhodey since his teen years and Prince Eclipse belonging to Wolfe for just as long. The world was crafted to be *their* playground first, then the rest of the Mane 9 as they were created.

We focus on things found in more traditional adult fantasy. Political disputes, rich histories, and varied cultures with differing ideals all came from trying to develop rich inner worlds for our characters.

I'd say the biggest changes would be how little we take from the show, the magic system is completely redone taking from both TTRPGs and Video Games for ease of understanding. The few characters that are grandfathered in from the show are left for religious roles like Gods and Mythological figures that don't interact with the plot as individuals but rather ideas.
