Columbus & Greenville Railway

Back in the 1970s, some friends and myself ventured down to see the revived Columbus & Greenville Railway. This road had been purchased by the Illinois Central Gulf in 1972, but became independent once again in 1974. In any case, after driving down from the Midwest, we stopped in Columbus, Mississippi, to do some night shots of their intriguing and ancient equipment.

In the first image, looking over the turntable, we see CAGY 604, a Baldwin DRS-6-4-1500. It was built in December of 1946 or January of 1947 for the railroad; I have no information on its disposition.

The second image shows CAGY 42, a Whitcomb 65-ton switcher. It was built in 1944 for the U. S. Army (as number 8459) and came to the Columbus & Greenville in 1948 and was eventually scrapped in Greenville.

The next day we got to see another Baldwin out on the road, and you can see it in this previous post.
