A major report from the Sir Lenny Henry Centre for Media Diversity reveals a backlash in newsrooms following diversity initiatives introduced after the Black Lives Matter movement. Black British TV journalists are experiencing “resentment” from white colleagues because of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, a new damning report has said. The report, Breaking: The experience of racially minoritised people working in UK TV newsrooms, reveals some Black journalists have received a “backlash” from white colleagues because of DEI initiatives since the Black Lives Matter movement. Led by Rohit Kachroo, ITV News‘ global security editor, and Birmingham City University lecturer Dr Ellie Tomsett, the research is from the Sir Lenny Henry Centre for Media Diversity study, which aimed to find out about the lived-experiences of British Black and minoritised journalists. Worryingly, 80 journalists were questioned and 63% said they had experienced racism in their workplace. When asked whether diversity schemes introduced over the last five years were “working well” 60% of the respondents either disagreed or strongly disagreed.
