Do you know anything about your people? Your father probably took you fly-fishing, helped you with your geometry homework after coming home from work. You’ll probably do the same
Some instructions on black masculinity -Ross Gay (via im-notbatman)
The woman Gay’s friend is dating makes activities like fly fishing, helping with homework, seeing the father involved in his son’s life, the priority of education in the house hold, all positive things, seem like African-Americans can’t do these activities or care about them. She is buying into stereotypes that education isn’t taken seriously, or that fathers aren’t a part of their son’s lives for people of color, thus equating these things with traditional “black masculinity.” Instead of praising her boyfriend for being a good future father, she demeans him, making fun of how he seems “white,” even though being black goes way beyond cultural stereotypes.
