BUCKET LIST | The Whitest Dunes Alive
For all the supertrams out there, here’s a place you must not miss on, The Lençois Maranhenses National Park. Situated in the Northeast region of the country, it’s the whitest desert in the world, the reason why Brazilians call it “linen”, clean white sheets of sand... Actually, they are quartz looking like snow-capped mountains.
Every six months, these dunes blueish with lagoons, born out of thin air and the most clear waters, bringing several types of fauna to the park: amazing tortoises, fishes, frogs, and flocks of birds enchant the world of science.
As a result of the magical phenomenon driven by wind, water, and time in which the quartz come down into the ocean and from there are directed towards the actual deserted area where they land, and because of the laws of physics at play, that is, since their density is higher than that of other particles, water washes all the lightweighed ones away from the area and all left are these white precious rocks accumulated in the form of dunes. By bringing out life into the world, and then completing the cycle of life of its creatures by the coming down of the water levels and the desert’s reflourishment.
Thus, once the rainy season starts, water drops grow into puddles and emerald-green lagoons spring like a magical show of spontaneous generation of life and thanks to all the rain repressed, making this place perfect for walking barefoot and enjoy the sensation on your feet, or swim on fresh and sweet waters.
Usually, people flight out to São Luis, from where they take a bus to Rodoviária and from there another one to Barreirinhas. Then a jeep or any 4x4 vehicle finally takes you to this precious place, which was determined a National Park on June 2nd, 1981. Some others, just enjoy a magical overflight.
