More facts about my parents:
I say my parents are both committed Democrats, but my dad was actually raised a Republican. He switched parties in his youth because he liked John Kennedy.
My mom is more apolitical. But the first time California had an initiative to ban same-sex marriage (the Knight Initiative, Proposition 22, in 2000), she was out there working against it.
Both of my parents are musical. They sing in the church choir, my mom plays piano and teaches music as a volunteer in an elementary school classroom, and my dad has been singing Barbershop since he was in college. He’s currently the president of his local chapter.
They’re both essentially retired now (they’ll be 69 this year). My mom is happy with it; I think my dad is bored.
And yet more favorite things…
My favorite classical composer is Beethoven, so I’ve been excited that my choir is involved in a big Beethoven project at Stanford. This weekend, we performed the Mass in C (which is one of my favorite things to sing ever), and next month we start rehearsing the 9th Symphony.
I can’t really pick any one favorite rock band, but the band I’ve seen in concert most often is Barenaked Ladies. Sadly, the main lead singer left a couple of years ago; I’ve seen them once since, but it’s not quite the same. My favorite song of theirs is their cover of “Lovers in a Dangerous Time”.
