#mood Vol. 1
My 1st mood board of the year. I’ve been thinking a lot about classic comic strips lately, reading the Sunday strips were my favorite. Brenda Starr, Reporter was my absolute favorite and the girls of Archie! The drawing styles really grabbed me at an early age.
I really wanted to start an illustration series of comic style inspired drawings working with flat colors and line. The Tan Magazine cover above was my visual aid for my first attempt, I just love the way the model is looking over the glasses. I can imagine her making a sly remark like, “Say what, now?!”
In some of my research I have been exploring the work of Jackie Ormes, who is documented as the 1st Black female comic illustrator, her series Torchy Brown and the series Friday Foster, Black female photographer and fashion model, created by Jim Lawrence in the 70s. I hope to get some better insight on the work and will do some features on their work soon.
The intersections of female and black representation in throwback comics is where I’m at.
