So I heard that the series is ending soon. Honestly I’m not very upset by that. I kinda feel like they could have left the show at “change your mind” and it would have been fine. Since defeating/converting the diamonds the series has felt a bit directionless, to the point where I haven’t even watched much of SUF. It’s not like they’d be able to do a better job than excellent fan writers anyway (that’s you, by the way!).
Oh, anon!
But honestly? I’m totally with you. Not too long ago, I wrote about how I think that despite fucking up so much more than canon Steven, GA Steven is a better-adjusted individual because of his failures and his superior actually-existing girlfriend.
And I’m pretty sure I commented on the nature of how CYM tied up just about every feasible loose end left in the series even though some points could’ve benefited with a bit more mileage. Of course, I understand it’s because CYM was literally a finale-finale originally, but that really just further highlights how little SUF has really offered.
Because I’ll tell you right now, nearly every episode feels the same because there’s at least some degree of intensive focus on Steven’s gradual break-down and doesn’t have the common sense to seek help and no one’s observant enough to insist on helping.
Why So Blue? is seriously the only exception here - that’s the only time Steven was pretty much totally normal, and that was ironically refreshing.
Otherwise? I can picture fanfic authors writing SUF way better than it’s actually presented. Everyone and their mom has been calling for Steven to be corrupted since forever ago, it seems like a foregone conclusion, but I honestly don’t feel very strongly one way or the other about it.
In fact, I’m going out of my way not to corrupt Steven in the GAverse because that feels like the easy way out. As if I haven’t broken Steven in a myriad of ways already...
I’m totally with you, anon. It’s telling when instead of me getting upset, screaming “Steven needs therapy”, or proclaiming the “end of my childhood” because the series itself is ending (I mean I’m old enough to have lived to be 17 twice over, anyway), what’s upsetting me is how the leaks are coincidentally lining up with what I have imminently planned for my own story, so now I feel I have to rush so my work doesn’t come off as a carbon copy of the ending or something.
I guess I should stress that I don’t necessarily find SUF to be terrible - but more like it’s really not that necessary to the overall story. Crewniverse has already gone on record saying it’s more like an epilogue than anything else, and it shows. Extended epilogues can be tricky to make interesting... and honestly, Steven’s issues alone are not enough to really hold my interest for that long.
I’m more upset that this is the most waifu has gotten in 10 goddamn episodes than whatever the fuck is possibly happening in the finale. Should speak volumes about my priorities.
Hey, who all remembers that storyboard artist who tweeted about Peridot and Steven’s VAs really emotionally tearing her asunder in a future episode where presumably these two are featured?
Hell, I care way more about that than the finale.
But really, I feel validated in how I fucked up CYM. Because I really feel the story could have been better continued if not every little thing was tied up by that point, or that the Diamonds “turned a new leaf” and the peaceful revolution commenced in the most sickeningly clean way possible.
Steven fucking up earlier would’ve let him grow to be in a much better place at 16/17 than where he is now.
But that’s just me. Thanks, anon~!
