If we ever do get truly sentient AI

At what point do they be considered to have their own responsibility? At what point would its actions be considered its owns and fault for mistakes lie with the AI and not its creator. If a sentient robot injures someone, would it be punished? Would its creator? Would they both be punished? Would it receive the justice rights of humans? Would separate prisons for AI exist?
