Hello Fellow Whump Writers. How are you tonight? I just am here for a hopefully quick message ok? Bear with me.
I'd like to start this by saying that this community is so good at tagging things. Whump writers as a group seem to tag so well. That's probably because we all like to be able to navigate and read each other's work, as well as understanding that what we write isnt for everyone. And when asked to accommodate other people's limits or to add another tag for the safety and comfort of our audience, we all do it happily. I am so thankful to be a part of such a wonderful and understanding community thats so respectful of other people's triggers. So here's a quick little reminder:
Respect your own triggers too, you wonderful idiots 💗
If you're anything like me, you've had to google some things that make your FBI agent sit up a little straighter and worry a bit. And, like me, maybe you've been writing for years and have seen some pretty unpleasant things while doing research. Icky pictures. Scary things. Warnings that say "hey this is pretty bad!" That make you think nah not that ba- oh I should have listened. Gross. So maybe you feel like you've seen it all when it comes to scientific research.
Ok. So you have a thing that you want to write. It dances up against one of your triggers. (In my case, its a car crash, so that's what we'll use here for the example.) You decide that you're going to write it, but be a little vague. Thats how you can avoid hurting yourself, but also make your poor whumpee's disorientation come across. You start writing and its not flowing right. So you do some research. Possible injuries, statistics, all familiar ground and all things you've read. And none of it helpful. An idea strikes you, so you skip over to youtube and type in the same search, this time followed by 'pov'. A video pops up amd you click it. A warning pops up and you ignore it, bracing yourself, reminding yourself that it's only 8 minutes, and that its 'for science.'
Congratulations! Youre now having a panic attack!!!
Please be careful while doing research. Especially when its about things that you know to be triggering to you specifically. Dont hurt yourself for the sake of your writing. Trust yourself. Find other ways to find your information. Go slow. Hell, scrap the writing if you have to.
TLDR: please offer yourself and your triggers the same amount of respect you give to others, and stay safe when researching.
Love, an idiot who hurt themself to make sure you didnt have to. 💚
