Jesse Lynch Williams
(August 17, 1871 – September 14, 1929)
American playwright notable for having won the very first Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his comedy play Why Marry? in 1917.
The play was first published in 1914 as "And So They Were Married", then republished (or reprinted) in 1918 as Why Marry? Both editions were printed by Charles Scribner's Sons. I found a copy of both on pdf on Google Books about ten years ago.
According to my notes I read it back in 2017 but I don't remember much about it. Comedy, in general, tends to age kind of poorly and so I may have simply missed a lot of what made the people of 1917 decide it deserved a Pulitzer Prize.
Although I did look around to see if any theatres have produced it recently and I did see one for certain did a production in 2013.
