My thoughts on Dr. Stone’s Chapter 229 (“Why-Man”)

My thoughts after reading Chapter 229:

01. I won’t mention the details here, both because I’d just be repeating what the manga told us... and, to tell the truth, I’m a bit wary of writing much here, because this is THE biggest mystery of the series :O If there was ever a chapter to NOT accidentally spoil for non-manga readers, it’s this one :O But this chapter is INCREDIBLE, because... it ALL makes sense.

02. Why Earth was chosen; why swallows were chosen; why humans were chosen... How Treasure Island got their attention; why there was a second wave of Medusas; how the people of Treasure Island learned how to use the Medusas... It explains the reason “WHY WHY WHY” was the first thing Senku and the others said...

03. ...and, though Whyman hasn’t gotten to it yet, that explains why they chose to imitate Senku’s voice, as well as the Medusa was able to try to petrify them recently before they went to the moon.

04. A couple of things to note: First, in a chapter way, way back, they were talking about Whyman, and Chrome was the first and only one to mention the possibility that Whyman (if they had named him already at the time) could be a friend, not an enemy - and in Chapter 228 (the previous chapter), it was also the same, with Chrome being the first one to mention that maybe the Medusas WEREN’T trying to destroy them! Top-notch thinking, Chrome! :) (And my second point is... I wish Kohaku had spoken in this chapter, but I understand why she didn’t; this is Whyman’s big chapter, after all! And Stanley didn’t speak either; hmm...)

05. But if Whyman is smart enough to do all this, why doesn’t it understand why petrification is an undesirable state of being for humans (and swallows)? Do they not understand how organic organisms move and live? Sure, we can be conscious in stone for over three thousand years, but we sure wouldn’t WANT to be. Being mechanical, does their understanding of life stop at consciousness, and they don’t take other things into account, like relationships and entertainment? Most humans would much rather live eighty years with loved ones and media entertainment than three thousand years trapped in stone and THEN have to run away from wild animals for the rest of their lives.

06. I do love, though, that even with all their power, the Medusas aren’t perfect. They have disagreements; they’re confused by humans; and they were emotional enough, or maybe just confused enough, that frenzied questioning was their very first communicated message to humanity, as if they couldn’t help themselves and were all screaming the same thing in unison!

07. However, I also think that this chapter makes the whole Dr. Stone story a little bit sadder. Maybe I’ll explain what I mean by this when I finish the manga.

08. Still, for me, this was a wonderfully informative chapter, answering SO many questions in an INCREDIBLY logical and comprehensive explanation :O :D In the next chapter, I expect them to explain why they chose Senku’s voice (though we pretty much already know why) and see more of the negotiations, which hopefully will include the depetrification of the seven billion humans on Earth. I also hope that Senku and the other humans refuse the offer of eternal life, but offer to make enough batteries for Whyman until they’re all fine and they can go elsewhere and leave Earth alone... although maybe AFTER Whyman gives them all the information he has on the other planets and galaxies in the universe?
