Hi! Your monitors are lovely! I'm making one myself too. Could you please tell me what you did for the monitor to stay in place? I'm having a hard time with that so I would really appreciate your help :)
Thank you! And we had some foam in the sides and a hard helmet which is probably similar to this one: http://www.amazon.com/Safety-Works-818064-Ratchet-White/dp/B000BQ85W8/ref=lp_553566_1_24?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1465253067&sr=1-24
The helmet had a notch you could turn in the back, which was really useful because once the monitor was on our heads we could just reach in and tighten it so it could stay in place better.
Hope this helps :)
Hello! I really like your blog! It's very cool and has a lot of stuff I like! Well, I really came here to ask you two questions. Hope you don't mind! ^.^ 1) What does it matter if Kaneki uses different pattern of speech? I mean, what's the difference if he says "boku" to "ore"? I don't really know all the difference between Japanese pronouns. I'll ask my other question in another ask. Sorry for the inconveniences!!!
Sure, I can answer! I literally started learning Japanese like a few months ago, but I think I can point out the most obvious differences.
That said, anyone speaking Japanese, please check if I’m actually telling the truth, I don’t want to spread misinformation.
In Japanese, there’s different ways you can address someone (and yourself)
Now, in Japanese you don’t have to put a subject into every sentence. I’m not sure which language you speak, but my native language is Polish and actually the same happens here. I can’t tell how much difference there is between Polish in Japanese in this aspect (I imagine a lot), but in Polish it sounds funny if you say “I” in a sentence unless you want to emphasise your point. And you don’t say “You”, because it sounds rude or just really awkward. But, I don’t know if that’s the same for Japanese!
The only information I can give you is what my teacher told me, that you generally avoid using pronouns, because if you keep using “I” (watashi/ore/boku), it sounds like you’re making yourself very important. And if you keep using “You” (anata/kimi/omae), you’re getting into someone’s personal space. It’s not like you’re not allowed to use it! You just shouldn’t use that too often. Oh, and you don’t really use “he” or “she” (I heard it’s pretty rude), so like in my class, we didn’t even learn the names for it.
But coming back to “You”, since it might be considered rude to use those three variants, Japanese people are more likely to use a person’s name instead. Say, a person’s name is Tanaka-san and you want to ask them about something, you’ll start the question with “Tanaka-san wa...”, even if you’re addressing them directly.
The most neutral and polite variant for “I” is watashi, used by both men and women to refer to themselves. Ore and boku are used only by men to refer to themselves, but the usage depends on how they want to be seen by others. It’s kind of hard to explain, but basically boku is much, much softer than ore. It’s only used in close relationships, and it shows a much gentler personality. A man who treats himself very seriously probably wouldn’t refer to himself as boku. So it’s only used by young boys/men. Ore is usually used by tough guys, it’s much more badass than boku, hah. Similarly to boku, it’s also used only between people who are very close.
As for anata/kimi/omae, they’re all very unsafe variants, but anata is the most neutral of the three. You use kimi when talking to friends, I wouldn’t say it’s rude, but if you refer to a person with bigger authority as “kimi”, you will sound disrespectful. I’ve read something that might help you understand you better, it’s kind of like using a nickname, you wouldn’t use that when talking to so someone older or I don’t know, someone you just met. Omae is usually for more intimate relationships, I would say, so if you used that when talking to a stranger, you really would be imposing, hah. You have to be really good friends with someone to be able to use that.
So basically, it’s very strange that Kaneki decided to change his pronouns. Because even when he became Shironeki, he kept refering to himself as boku. So why now? What does that mean for his personality?
It makes me feel very uneasy, honestly. Also, if you want to read more about honorifics and pronouns in Tokyo Ghoul, I recommend this post. It’s always cool to know who uses what. :) It does say a lot about the characters and the relationships between them.
