I received many comments & DM saying “Please do not change what you do. ”Don't worry - I will not. ☆ Sashiko is like my family. When someone disrespect it, I try to protect it. I can be aggressive if needed. ☆ We (I mean Sashi.Co) decided to open our house for strangers. When someone visit us and do not take shoes off, we would politely ask them to follow the Japanese custom. Some may disagree to take off shoes for their reasons. Then I would politely explain why we ask you to follow the custom. If they still disagree after the explanation, then I would ask them to leave. No need for the seeds of future trouble. We respect the other culture & condition. What if they decided to come into the house with shoes on regardless? Then, I would drag them outside of the house and refuse them to come in. I would be offended by them disrespecting the culture. ☆ However, the actual fear isn’t there. What if, my child who is new to this culture of taking shoes off, start thinking that it is okay to keep the shoes on in the house? The child is so innocent that she could implement the easier option. (Please understand that I am talking about Sashi.Co, one ramification of big Sashiko tree. I do not want to speak on behalf of the other Sashiko that I do not practice.) ☆ I guess what I experienced may not be a case of Cultural Appropriation (Again, I really need to study on CA.) The fear is about navigating people in the unintended direction with the information we share. My goal is to share Sashiko as Japanese culture - therefore, I may consider the navigator, who speak about Sashiko focusing on only the result, as a kind of invader to the family. Well, I will try to be polite to the invaders at least 3 times. This is from Japanese proverb. So, no worries. In last 3 months, I had written more than 30 articles in Patreon. People sometimes wonder, “how can you write so much from one simple subject, Sashiko?” Well. Sashiko is my life now. I don’t drink, smoke, nor gamble (anymore). I used to drink, smoke, and gamble A LOT… While the normal adults enjoy social life, I focus on my daughter, house-making, and Sashiko. I can do Sashiko while doing something else, but imput is limiting. I can watch a “Walking Dead” but not “Game of thrones”. Output is also limited because both hands are stitching. Therefore, I have so many hours of talking to myself. Of course, I have many stories to share - from the hidden drawers that I received in my childhood that I have once forgotten. We see a lot of “success stories - (scams)” online for how to be “rich” in “simple 3 steps”. It is probably (ultimately) human’s desier to get wealthy easily. However, Sashiko existed when the Japanese didn’t even have a choice to be “wealthy”. So, if you practice Sashiko for the purposes of “being (financially) rich” and “getting famous”, then Sashiko wouldn’t be a good choice. However, if you enjoy Sashiko to find who you are (be okay with what you are), then Sashiko & its rhythmical stitching can navitage you to the judgemental-free zone, where you can simply enjoy the stitching itself. Because of characteristic, I want many people understand what Sashiko is with understanding some Japanese culture. ☆ - - - ☆ 「どうやったら楽に豊かになれるか」。人類の永遠のテーマなのかもしれませんが、刺し子においては、「ある程度豊かになった向こう側」を考える必要があると思います。「楽にお金を稼ぐ方法」や「有名になって派手に生きる」という真逆に原点がある刺し子。「豊かになる」という選択肢すらなかった頃の手仕事を、ある程度豊かになった僕たちがどう受け止めて解釈をするか。 ☆ 「お金持ちになりたい」「有名になりたい」という願い”だけ”では刺し子を続けていくのは不可能な気がしています。ただ、「自分と向き合うきっかけが欲しい」という、「生きていくのには特段困っているわけではないけれど、でも、何かもうひとつきっかけが欲しい」という方にとって、半強制的に自分と向き合うことができる刺し子は、とても大きな役割を果たしてくれると思っています。不思議なことに、この「刺し子らしさ」は、敢えて言葉にしなくても、日本語圏では一般常識として受け入れられているように思うのです。刺し子を謙虚に「楽しめている」人が多いこと。「刺し子を踏み台に！」と考えている人にはまだ出会ったことがありません。 ☆ 僕が怒りを抱いた理由はここなのかもしれないな……と。「刺し子で有名になりたい」と思う事は良いのです。ただ、日本的な刺し子を知ろうとせずに、「Sashikoという言葉を使って」有名になったりお金を稼ごうとしているのが、やっぱりどうも気に食わないのかもしれません。有名になるのもお金を稼ぐのも良いことなんです。ただ、「刺し子とは何だったのか」を蔑ろにされるのだけは許せないんだろうな……と。僕もまだまだ未熟です。 ☆ #Sashiko #WhySashiko #SashikoEmbroidery #SashikoStitching #Mending #刺し子 https://www.instagram.com/p/B06x4T4pc1d/?igshid=1n7hcroiqig12

Boro. The Japanese stitched for the purpose of survival. We now see it as the Art. I wonder what they would think if we value something they just practiced. - - - - - ☆ 先日の投稿で、「金銭的に裕福になることや、有名になることが最終目的じゃない。」と英語で書きました。根本的で大事なお話なので、少し追記です。本心は心のどこかで「所詮、刺し子だし」という諦めに似た感情があるのかもしれません。そりゃ、お金に困らない生活には憧れるし、有名になってチヤホヤされてみたい気持ちもあるのですが、ただ、「お金と知名度」を到着地点にするのであれば、刺し子はあまり優れた選択肢ではない。だから、お金と知名度以外に辿り着きたい到着地点（最終目的）は他にあります。 ☆ 「刺し子と生きる」と覚悟を決めるまで、妥協だらけでした。その妥協の名残は今も残っていて、日々の行いの中で、「（大きなことは求めず）できることを愚直に続ける」という形で表れています。「刺し子を世界に広める！」という壮大な夢を持つと、それだけ歪が出てきます。お金も知名度も必要になるでしょう。無理をせず、でも好きな刺し子を守りたい。結果として何をしているかと言えば、日々、刺し子について文章を書き、紐づけされた刺し子画像を紹介し、その積み重ねが「インターネット検索結果での刺し子」を、近代的な刺し子で塗り替えられないようになればと思っています。 ☆ 様々な形の刺し子があります。その上で、僕は、基本の基本とも言える運針だけで完結する刺し子が好きなんです。「綺麗な結果」を求めて刺繍的な要素をどんどん刺し子が取り込んで、新しい形になることは素晴らしいことです。同時に、誰かがどこかで、「刺し子って日常の針仕事だったんだよ」と言い続けることも、やっぱり必要かなと。今、世界的に評価を上げている襤褸は、そんな「未来の価値」なんて考えずに、ただひたすらに、その日々を愚直に生き抜こうとした先輩たちが残したものなので。そこまでのプロセスを表現し続ける人は、アホみたいに愚直に同じことを続ける人は、存在しても面白いんじゃないかなって。 ☆ #Sashiko #JapaneseBoro #Boro #WhySashiko #VisibleMending #SlowStitch #Upcycle #UpcycleStitches #刺し子 #襤褸 - [Note] - - A Longer article (story) is available on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/sashiko). Ok. I made a video. I get feedback with “quick reading”. Wording Matters. Above said, I wrote an article “I encourage you to call it Sashiko”. Please read what I write with mindfulness. I never said I am offended by someone’s “Sashiko” stitching, and will never think I own Sashiko. Please spend some time to read what I have been writing. So many articles from the link on our profile. ☆ Although I am open in the usage of wording “Sashiko”, I have a sincere request when people call it “Sashiko” - care & appreciation to the Japanese culture and mindset behind Sashiko. If you acknowledge the association between Sashiko and Japan, yet intentionally ignore it, then I will confront. Why? Because it can overwrite the image of the words. The same as #KimOhNo issue. As long as we share Sashiko with respecting the culture, the practice of Sashiko will survive. The result can transform. However, when we let Sashiko go as a mere technique without Japanese culture, our identity may be overwritten. The Kimono is the same. The Japanese would not react much when Kim was showing respect to the Kimono and the Japanese mindset. I learned that “Individualism / Capitalism” can change the general image of long-established culture, in this case, Kimono and for me Sashiko. I encourage people to call their stitching Sashiko when they care about the Japanese culture. The more people enjoy Sashiko with being attentive to the Japanese mindset, then the Sashiko we practice will be passed down. If you intentionally ignore the Japanese culture behind Sashiko, then why do you call it Sashiko? (It is not an accusation. I simply would like to know why. (Before & After) This is how much I (Atsushi) changed over 9 years or so. There are reasons we are on the surface of Internet sharing the Sashiko we practice just recently: Before 2014, we tried to protect Sashiko by “hiding the secrets” from the public. I was in charge of several operations to keep the company running, right under my father’s (not good) management. I didn’t have time to investigate if I “can” like Sashiko. I viewed Sashiko as “numbers” back then. The only principal I cared was to be loyal to the customers who supported us. ☆ I may be a maverick in Sashiko. For the Japanese, an argument is the least preference. The discussion we had regarding “Why Do You Call it Sashiko?” wouldn’t be a case if I didn’t study in the USA (to speak up). The Japanese would just remain in silence. We don’t argue, but it means we draw the strong boundaries to “outsider”. Plus, Sashiko (& Boro as the result) reflected the Japanese concept of shame - to hide the poverty from the public eye. So, I feel, presenting Sashiko’s philosophy with this big mouth would be something not many Japanese have done before. It is simply not in their comfort zone (neither mine, lol) ☆ I share the Sashiko we practice so that we can contribute in making the “caring” community somewhere and in next generation at some point. I wasn’t smiling back in 2010. Now, I smile when I see the people who shares the passion with us in various ways - it is because Sashiko is no longer “numbers” for me. Mindful Reading and Quick Reading. ☆ I may have found the missing link regarding the previous unfortunate discussion. The key-word is Mindful Reading. It became SO LONG writing so it would be great if you could check the website. A link from our profile, or copy and paste the actual link from below. Quick Reading to get what we need may bring us the “successful life”. However, we may be losing the richness of life by focusing on Speed. So here it is. For those who are interested in Sashiko, when they read the worthwhile book, article, and paragraph, I want them to “try to” be mindful. It may provide another view of writing. (I explain more in the article above). I spend a lot of time to write with trying to be mindful as much as I can.
