LUCI WINKED AT HER
My first attempt at paper art! I recreated the cover of issue #24 of the Wicked and Divine starring Persephone. I used construction paper, handmade art paper, gold chains, and pen.
this piece is called "the domestic au all the wicdiv gays know they wanted, laura just got home from work and she interrupted her gf sakhmet's reading to give her a shoulderrub, also pink in the night by mitski is playing"
i think lauraluci is a central thread throughout wicdiv, but not as a romance. at least, not a straight-up one. it’s about (to me) disappointment -- being let down by another person when they’re not what you wanted them to be in your head and your heart.
“faust act” shows us laura wilson with a crush, and as far along as “imperial phase” (when she sleeps with the fan whose entire look is evoking luci) we see those romantic feelings are strong and lingering. laura put a lot of stock in how luci could act. she saw her as someone like her -- who wanted to be a god, wanted to be famous, wanted to perform -- and hoped luci would stay in prison and not prove ananke’s cabal right, and she hoped luci would give up her godhood like the rest of them. she wanted her to be someone worthy of her feelings.
but... luci doesn’t seem to have ever reciprocated those feelings. she’s only ever used laura for selfish purposes (breaking out of prison, only going along with the “okay” arc plan so long as it benefitted luci herself). laura has given and cared for so many of the cast, and luci seems to just repeatedly take, marking the difference b/w them. it’s possible to say that luci would’ve changed, with more time as an active god, not trapped in the underground. but... 1) we’ll never know 2) laura was still a much more selfless person prior to godhood than lucifer was. she saved the audience at the morrigan/baphomet concert fight, she risked the subway train to try to save luci.
i think the lauraluci story is about when we build someone up in our mind. when we see what we want to see, or when we hope things will turn out for the best and they don’t. but it’s not a cautionary tale -- team wicdiv isn’t one to say, “shame on you for being hopeful” -- i think it’s an acknowledgment, that’s all. “sometimes we hope people will be one way, and they let us down.” or, “sometimes we see people as something, and our judgment was wrong.”
but laura found other people. kinder, who chose to self-examine, to try to grow and improve. people she might not have picked at first, but turned out to be wonderfully human. so maybe lauraluci is about saying, “it sucks when you read someone wrong, or if they let you down. it absolutely does. it hurts. but there are other people around, or on their way. you might not recognize them at first, so. use different lenses. you might like what you see.”
-The Wicked + the Divine #6
Pretty cool that Laura knew even then this Pantheon could be different, and now she’s on the path to breaking its toxic cycle. (Also rereading the panels? Not that we needed another reason to dislike David, but he doesn’t even listen to what she’s saying! Laura never says she doesn’t see cycles. She says that David is “only seeing cycles,” and not considering changes that might occur with a new Pantheon, in an era vastly different from the 1920s, 1830s, etc. He hears that and warps her words, and then gets defensive, and so he flaunts his “credentials.” Laura doesn’t let him intimidate her, though!)
star wars au UNLEASHED
cassandra is like. a grey jedi. she left the order when she beat her trials cuz she saw thru the corruption and apathy, and has been wandering the galaxy, visiting her gfs now and then. then she met laura, who’s a space pirate and is force-sensitive. laura convinced her to train her in jedi stuff and now they’re master and apprentice roaming the planets and righting wrongs. also laura has space!champagne b/c they crashed a gala or something, idk
if you think about it, laura, baal, and dionysus are all parallels of unrequited love throughout the series. laura longs for the goddess she idolized, yet only got the chance to know for a few weeks, if that; baal can’t move on from the queen of heaven, after their passionate, one-month romance collapsed due to miscommunication and potential incompatibility; and dionysus spends the better part of imperial phase longing (albeit, respectfully so) for a woman who does not return his affections. it’s sort of a sad unifying factor between those three (and by proxy, through lucifer, inanna, and cassandra).
still full of stars
