The Wizard was touched because he understood Elphaba had truly loved him, unlike the other people of Oz, who just go with the flow and stick to what's popular. These few lines did appear in the stage play, but most of the others were unfortunately cut and replaced with new dialogue (or should I say, trialogue?). For example, the Wizard telling Elphaba he's lonely and that she must be lonely, too, or him offering to take care of her. You can watch the scene with the original cast here. I wish they hadn't changed it so much, but this is what we have...

IIRC, this wasn't in the final film, why??? It's the only part in the script (except for the "despite herself, disarmed" comment, which also wasn't shown) that indicates the Wizard still has some ability to penetrate Elphaba's defenses and her still having some affection to him. Yes, I get that he disappointed and hurt her, but it's really hard to let go of a dream she's had since childhood...

this scene will never not be hilarious to me, i love them both so much 😂 you will never convince me that the idea to just kiss her to shut her up didn’t cross this man’s mind because i know full well that it did 😏

elphie adored this woman so much, i hate her for what she did to her 😭 ugh, she deserved so much better.

this scene freaking hurts me for her because she just went from having one of the best nights of her life to having everything ruined for her in the space of two seconds, but i love that she had fiyero there to offer comfort to her when she needed it the most 😭
