Let Your Feet Lead The Way In May

“Feet are our bodies best means of transport, yet seventy-five percent of us never have them serviced. However, foot tune-ups are never too late.” These are wise words from podiatrist Aboobaker Sayed, of Sayed & Rajah Podiatrist, in support of World Foot Health Awareness Month (WFHAM) as designated by the International Federation of Podiatrists (FIP).

With over ten years of experience in the field, Mr Sayed appeals to the South African public to realise the importance and understated value of their feet and ankles, and most importantly, to have their ‘greatest mobility assets’ seen to during the month of May 2012 - and at least annually - so that they may be ‘kept continually healthy and strong’. A growing cause for concern is the misconception that running shoes are healthy as well as more comfortable for feet, however, according to research by www.foothealthfacts.org, the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) has warned female runners that the combination of wearing narrow, pointed shoes at work and pounding their feet from running on hard surfaces could cause a neuroma - a painful nerve disorder of the feet – and is more common in active women who enjoy running, especially those with flat feet.                                   

Men are not excluded from this finding either, as their feet and ankles tend to take a beating, with jobs which require long hours of standing or walking and leisure activities involving running and jumping. Men however tend to ignore foot and ankle problems until pain slows them down, making it crucial for them to know that pain is not normal, and that most of these conditions are easier to treat when diagnosed early.

Recent studies have also indicated that even though women are more susceptible to foot problems, there is a blatant disregard for comfort and health, as they fall prey to high end fashion trends such as increasing heel heights in the form of stilettos; platforms and wedge heels to name a few. Most women would admit to braving the pain and opting for high heeled/uncomfortable shoes that look good, as opposed to more comfortable alternatives, and a growing number of men have joined their female counterparts in pursuing the fashion world where narrower styling has filtered through to men’s footwear as well, adding to the list of related ailments such as corns; bunions and heel pain.

                            These are all factors adding to the escalating foot and ankle issues (which in turn relate to back and knee problems) that are so prevalent in modern society, with little or no knowledge of available resources or no action being taken to rectify and relieve such problems. It is imperative that people be more aware of their feet and how it affects the rest of their bodies, and more over that they are aware of foot healthcare professionals such as podiatrists who are able to assist with and treat any discomfort or related ailments.

This Week On WickedRunway!

This week, in the second issue of WickedRunwayFeature: Cavalli:  The Master Blogs…and Winter the Italian Way, we learn just a little bit more about this mastermind in the industry, taking a brief look at the moments in Runway-time that have made him an icon and have kept him from that downward spiral into mediocrity as the rise of edgy, affordable fashion hits the streets in waves and in a way that the 60’s heck right up to the 90’s could not have achieved - all thanks to the global community pitching tents and living off the internet.

  Calling all GymBunnies who can't get to the gym. In the first of our weekly issue of WickedRunway HotBodz, we feature Fitness Blender, an online fitness movement with the guidance of experts in home fitness.  Looking good can't come with any easier instructions and for those of us who workout reguarly, Fitness Blender offers such a variety to add-on to your workouts.

                               Bill Gayten’s Galliano Fall/Winter 2012 Collection

The people of "The South" are just about a couple of days away from bloody raging winds, negative degrees celsius and sniffles en masse.  Fear not the oncoming withdrawal of heat my pretties, for where there are puffy eyes, shivering red noses, and an endless supply of Kleenex - we can at least be happy in the knowledge that there are people out there who care enough to make the torture so much more bearable... image wise... naturally.

See, in an assortment of boho-chic, this beautiful beast “Fashion” we call on in times of need will evoke that warm and fuzzy feeling one gets…when one walks past a mirror, and sees the layers of buffer in soft materials delicate enough to lack bulk but insulated enough to incubate. Which is what matters when one decides to walk, uphill against the raging winds to hail a cab at 6:00 am in the morning. 

Well now; to the matter at hand, Bill Gaytten, was not thrust into the frontlines as a debut for Dior in the aftermath of public outrage over an emotionally distressed or dwarfed (...take your pick) John Galliano's racial outburst, violent assult, "you're nothing but a cheap whore" rant and praise for Hitler.  Gaytten has been around the couture block a couple of times.  Though; true to form, change is a bitch and the fans of Galliano's work, the "Gallianoists" hated the idea of a Christian Dior without Galliano...more so, a Galliano without Galliano.  

He is not some "new kid on the block".  In fact, if you've never seen his shows, this is the designer who takes two bows at the end of shows...one doesn't bother with that overt confidence unless one is a veteran.   And veteran he is, his is a resume that reads like a design student's wishlist, a name-dropper's dream really:  Givenchy, Chanel, DNA, Dior (at different stages in his career) and much more.

Gaytten's Galliano Fall/Winter 2012 Collection showcased at the Paris Fashion Week had the elements of a throwback to a much more flirty era with a bit of a power sucker punch.  It has a somewhat more demure atmoshpere with that distinct threat of an underlying "wild thang" woman in mind. Some of the signature pieces WickedRunway love include this ideal combination piece, layered, with a unique color blend, variations auburn to russet to brown:

                                  The colors chosen reflect a moody yet whimsical Fall/Winter and the idea that one could be delicate rather than heavy during the freezer that encases us during the coldest weeks in the year,

                                For the office (and keeping in mind that you might have to be on the receiving end of a pot of gold) each piece could be toned just a tad bit down with a good pair of black pant-leggings or black stockings available in mass production so take your pick of department stores, boutiques, exclusive outfitters...whatever, chances are you'll find the one you want without much effort.
