One of my biggest pet peeves as a demigender person is that a lot of people seem to assume some demigender people are half cis. Like, demiboys who were camab and demigirls who were cafab. I understand why someone might come to that conclusion, but I don't fucking like it. Cis gender refers to a person whose gender identity aligns with their assigned gender at birth, and no one was assigned demigirl, demiboy, demigender, or nonbinary at birth. I have come across afew demigender people who do identify that way, and I'm not trying to tell anyone how to personally identify. That being said nonbinary people identifying as cis does often seem to be rooted in internalized transphobia and I think it's important to acknowledge that that's an underlying issue within the community. Hypothetically speaking, though, as an example, a demiboy who was camab might not at all identify with their assigned gender. Being demigender can be more nuanced than that. Like, being demigender can also be more nuanced than literally identifying 50% nonbinary and 50% binary. Some demigender people do absolutely describe their gender as identifying partially with their assigned gender and partially with something else, but I think it's fucking weird to then go on and reduce all demigender people who identify in closer proximity to their cagab as basically cis. I think it's shitty for anyone to just assume a nonbinary person is actually cis, or basically cis. Their gender identity might be in closer proximity to their cagab, and identifying in closer proximity to your cagab comes with privilege, but that doesn't make them cis. If someone's telling you they're nonbinary/trans, don't assume that they're cis, that's fucking transphobic. I think it's shitty that those demigender people tend to get reduced to gender non-conforming cis people and not nonbinary trans people regardless of how they actually identify. Like, years and years ago, I used to identify as demigirl and used they/she pronouns, but I noticed people ( who claimed to be trans allies ) would ignore my transness and also default to she/her pronouns. Ultimately, that's why I stopped using she/her pronouns. Not because I hate them at default, but because it created an environment where people felt comfortable ignoring that I'm not my cagab for their own convenience/comfortability. At that point, whether I liked she/her pronouns or not, people were still misgendering me, or kinda degendering, I guess. My gender identity/my understanding of my gender identity/my expression of my gender identity is more nuanced now. Like, I identify more with being a witch than a binary woman in those terms, but I'm also a little weary of using terminology like demigirl because of how some demigender people get treated . You can be trans and a woman, but not a trans woman, and that doesn't make you cis. Not to defend other tme trans people who are being blatantly transmisogynistic because that behavior is not okay, but I think this is why some tme nonbinary people are so set on appropriating terms like trans woman and trans fem from tma trans people. It's language that inherently centers both transness and womanhood or transness and femininity. That being said, appropriating language from tma trans people and othering trans woman isn't how we solve this issue. I identify a lot with demifemme. I really like that term because it kinda decenters the language of the male/female gender binary and centers a queer expression of femininity that decenters cis hetro normativity and the male gaze. Anyhow, this was mainly just a rant and an infodump, but feel free to give your feedback. Constructive criticism is welcomed. If you're going to be transphobic, transmisogynistic, or like chronically online, and tell me I'm using the label femme incorrectly even though historically speaking, I'm really not, that's not constructive criticism lol
