I find Widgit symbols to be really accessible and easy to understand, on par with PCS, and far more so than symbolstix for some reason. Despite Widgit also being very simplistic and stick figure based. They are too samey to me, I think, and the way they depict objects isn't very clear either and the colors can be too muted to grab my eye. Wish Widgit was more available on US english AAC software and boards!! Grid has it, but only for UK english boards! Other apps with it baked in are usable in the US, sure, but don't have specific vocabulary or voices, and having to pick between accessible symbols and accessible app design and motor planning is painful.
Symbols can be really important for AAC usage for those who need them, and like much with AAC, profit motive is robbing people of resources that could help them. More world-wide accessibility to these symbols needs to happen, though that would take companies cooperating with each other and the symbol designers to be less strict with copyright. Which.... lol Free symbol resources are amazing and getting better all the time, but people grew up on the proprietary symbol sets. They might think in them, they might be the most accessible and easy to understand for them, they might be the easiest to see for those who need the high contrast versions, other symbols might be overstimulating, etc. These symbol sets are researched and tested to be clear and understandable to as many as possible, making them work very well for so many people. They should be more readily available, world-wide, for free!
