A free and open-source progressive web app for Augmentative and Alternative Communication

Another free symbol AAC app, this time one that is a web browser based app like Asterics Grid, making it accessible from devices like chromebooks. It is called AACore. It's in UK English.

It comes with several pre-loaded core word board and a keyboard, but you can also edit it or import/export a board (seems to take .json files). It has dark mode, font options, and a search function! It appears to work offline, like Asterics, and can be added as an "app" on a tablet or phone the same way.

I want to share a great free symbol based AAC app I found out about recently!!! It’s called weave chat, and as far as free apps go it’s pretty robust!

I tried it out and it has lots of pros! But the cons are pretty big. So without further ado:

Pros:

Free

Robust vocabularies

A bunch of boards to choose from

You can add or not add more adult topics like alcohol, sex, and birth control so good for more than just kids!

Also I think the fringe vocab pages for popular kids books is a great idea!

Some basic verb conjugation in verbs, other buttons like -ing and -ed on some boards

Able to chat from the app- especially with support, which replies quickly!

Can save phrases

Good button finder with “show me” how to get to it

Some word prediction

Access to keyboard + the alphabet (buttons say “abc” rather than form words)

They are on instagram and actively improving the app based on suggestions

Cons:

Can’t add new buttons

Can’t edit buttons

Can’t edit boards without going into settings

A lot of nesting categories: food -> bakery-> bread

(May/may not actually be a con to some) they have their own symbols- probably not recognizable if you’re switching apps or use one symbol set at school/in life

I really appreciate that they made categories appropriate for teens and adults! They need mature words!!! I’m pretty sure the created is UK bases bc some words aren’t what we use in the US.

I think the ability to use the boards to make and send messages within the app is really great! Also, you can chat directly with the support line, and they reply quickly! (I found a bug and they replied and fixed it within a day)

Boo tumblr only lets you put 10 pics in 1 post so I can’t show the basic verb conjugation but I will reblog this to add it!

question for aac users

do any of you use jabtalk?

i keep searching it up as a tag but find nothing except promotional shit.

for those of you who want an aac app, jabtalk is a great place to start because it's entirely free, works offline, and is completely customizable. takes some time to create, though, cause doesn't come with free boards like other apps.

out of four free aac apps i have, jabtalk is my favorite, and not even done customizing.

not advertising jabtalk, just giving my opinion!

I recommend to use Cboard, it's totally free AAC app, there is both a web application and an app you can download for Android devices. You can check it out at cboard.io

New free text based AAC app for Android devices! Very simple and responsive app.

Has support for multiple languages, saved phrases, text enlarging, dark mode, and the option for online voices for nicer sounding text-to-speech.

Not compatible with the Acapela text-to-speech engine for Android, unfortunately. It would only recognize my phone's built in engine.

Edit: It recognizes it now! There's also an iOS version as well!

More free iOs AAC options with voice output. This time from symbol developers Widgit.

There is free versions of Widgits software that may be useful to some as AAC. The full versions of them are also somewhat affordable.

First is Widgit Go Basic, the free version of Widgit Go. This has symbol support. Not very robust and can't be edited in the free version, so not suitable for those who need it full time, or who are unable to supplement with other communication, like speech, when needed.

Second is Widgit Writer. It's (primarily) text-based and uses the device keyboard for input, so is compatible with bluetooth keyboards or accessible keyboard apps one might have. The free version has speech, with options to speak as you type, and the ability to resize the text. For an extra purchase there's the options for symbol supported text and saving and exporting what you write, and more voices.

This is my Asterics Grid board!

Was annoyed at a few things with WeaveChat for my small AAC, so I've been favoring SpeechAssistent, but typing can be hard for me to do all the time. (Especially when mobile phone keyboards are so small!)

So in looking for a solution I discovered Asterics can be installed and used offline like an app. I imported Vocal Flair 40 and have been making some edits so it's more usable to me.

I really like it! So excited to have better symbol support when I can't have my larger device.
