"Look, I'm not very good at being honest. Not even with my friends."
Leverage S02E04 The Fairy Godparents Job.
Sophie and her children
+ Widmark
I hope that Widmark Fowler and "Miss Donovan" kept in touch as pen pals, because Sophie's influence inevitably led that kid down the path to becoming a musical theatre performer
i am so ridiculously invested in 2x4 the fairy godparents job's b plot. hell yeah Science! The Musical !!! you go, my boy widmark, sing to me about bread mold!!! why are these songs such bops!!!
Couldn't get Leverage characters as Pokémon trainers out of my head
So obviously my first drawing is of Widmark Fowler and his fungus friends
"Who Amoonguss would want the nasty job that Foongus has?"
I’ve read some fantastic second generation Leverage fanfics and I do love the choices made about the kids they’ve interacted with who become the next generation. Josie (thief), Olivia (mastermind), Molly (hitter), Trevor (hacker), and Widmark (grifter) are great choices that I’ve seen. But I think that another excellent option for hacker is Jenny Sanders from The (Very) Big Bird Job. Personally out of the above listed kids I always thought that Trevor was the weakest link, in his episode he just hung around and watched them do a bit of crime with very little context. Though he bonded with Hardison and sat with him at the security room, he didn’t actually do anything tech related himself. But Jenny was shown to be at least pretty good with some sort of video editing application, showing some tech proficiency. I think she’d be a good option for a member of a second gen Leverage crew.
When you watch Leverage so much that you can sing along to Widmark’s bread mold song.
Having rewatched "The Fairy Godparents Job" again, it struck me how much Widmark is mirror of Sophie but also of Nate, as well as how important this episode is in regards to Nate and Sophie's relationship.
Sophie is the one who notices Widmark's musical talent and she sees his insecurities in the context of her recent failed relationship with her ex-boyfriend.
Widmark is also vaguely young Nate shaped, so that aspect comes across visually.
But Widmark (and really, the science-ical as a whole) is also the ideal combination of Nate and Sophie and their talents.
Sophie is a creative aspect, and the emotional compass of the team, while Nate is purely the head, the mastermind, the brains of the operation. Widmark is able to create a song about mold on the fly, showing he can be both creative and knowledgeable. (And on an even more meta level, Leverage as a show needs a balance of the fact and the emotion to tell a good story.)
And while Sophie sees herself in Widmark, I think she also sees Nate in Widmark:
I'll admit the parallels between Widmark and Nate here are slightly influenced by my own personal headcanons, but the rest of it is near-canon. In later episodes we actually see the strained relationship between Jimmy and Nate, and in "The Toy Job" Nate says that he believes the trumpet Jimmy gave him as a child was probably stolen from someone. Having a bookie involved with the mob and the Irish crime families almost certainly meant Jimmy ruined a few Christmases for kids Nate's age.
And at the same time, I think Nate may have been unconsciously drawing on his own strained relationship with his father only a few minutes before this conversation:
So yes, I think Nate and Sophie were projecting like crazy onto this kid. When is Widmark showing up in Leverage: Redemption?
