‘have you ever done something so TERRIBLE to someone that you’ve driven them away? like, say to another hospital?’

Silence filled the hospital room, the only sound to be heard was the faint scurrying of doctors, the patter of the light rain… and the sound of a dying heartbeat. No one expected the neurosurgeon to wake up, they were all doctors and they all knew holding out for a miracle only meant prolonging the inevitable. Although not fully aware of everything going on Derek had refused to give up and he kept pushing through for his family… there was no way in hell he was going to let another Shepherd or Grey family grow up without a father. No running, right? That’s what they had written in their vows. He wasn’t moving. He was staying, right there doing everything in his power to stay alive, but everyone knew it all came down to the medicine. If the medicine failed leaving another vital organ to start failing… well then that was it for the famous neurosurgeon.
As silence still filled the room, the heart monitor began to get a little louder indicating the slight increase of a heartbeat and the brain function began to slightly move up and down on the scanner. Something no one would notice unless they had been staring at it intently. His fingers began to twitch and the muscles began to wake up first -as his eyes slowly started to flutter open. Panic rushing in as he felt wires attached to his scratched up skin. As his eyes opened the room remained blurry only able to see the light shining towards him. He blinked. Things began to get clearer. He saw a figure. One more time. He blinked. A little clearer. Finally he blinked for the last time, uncovering the unknown figure as Meredith Grey. The girl from the bar. His wife. His everything. And all that fear that had rushed over him suddenly vanished and his head turned slightly gazing up at her, clearing his throat with slight pain before saying with a raspy voice. “Hey, stranger.”
