there is something so innately homoerotic to me about willow reprogramming buffybot in this essay i will

i'm focusing predominantly on willow's interactions with buffybot in becoming because... those are the kind of major ones to me i don't know get out of my face.

first there's buffybot, not once, but twice, saying that she's programmed to go to willow above all else. buffybot, who was originally created as little more than a glorified sex toy/robot girlfriend for spike, instead chooses to try to defy spike, to try to leave him and go find willow. and it's not an issue of the spike-loving being programmed out of her by willow, because the line immediately after the scene of buffybot saying she was programmed to go to willow is her exalting spike and praising him heavily.

buffybot has an innate need to go to willow when she's hurt, not all too dissimilar to real buffy (as seen in episodes like consequences, when buffy goes to willow when things get bad). at what point can a robot be considered conscious? how do we define consciousness? how are we to know if buffybot has developed these traits, or if they were programmed into her by warren or willow? we are told that willow has programmed buffybot to go to willow when she's injured; was willow aware of how this trait mirrored her buffy? has willow programmed buffybot to look at her like she hung the stars in the sky too? or was this independently developed by a robot capable of love? this is all tangential and weirdly philosophical i guess.

there's certain sexual undertones involved in semi-conscious robots. what is sex if not opening up your lover to you in the fullest way? willow pulls up buffy's shirt and opens a compartment on her stomach to insert a cable. obviously, the cable is a phallic symbol, because isn't it always?

there's something innately intimate about reprogramming a robot, especially when the robot is conscious of its changes. you insert something into a robot that is otherwise indistinguishable from a person aside from the wiring and cables, and fundamentally change who they are.

feels kinda on the nose to btvs's previous heavy handed metaphors of sex changing you (i.e. innocence).

does it not feel natural that willow would fall in love with a robot? she yearns for control over all else. she manipulates her human lovers too. she would want someone she could manipulate without shame, someone she is EXPECTED to manipulate and control.

am i overanalysing this? yes. but i'm having fun with it!

Okay but in the beginning of Same Time, Same Place, there is a joke about Anya not wanting her spellcasting with Willow to get too sexy. The show literally say "remember that two women casting a spell together usually means they're having sex? well we want to make sure you understand that this time it's just for plot reasons." They acknowledge that you might want to read it that way based on previous seasons, but you shouldn't, in that situation.

Anyway in the end of the same episode, when Willow and Buffy hold hand and do it on Willow's bed, that acknowledgement is missing.

No see, I absolutely agree that early season Wiffy would be cute and adorable and perfect. But I also realize that later seasons Willow is exactly the kind of trainwreck that Buffy would be into. Like, girlie is fucked up, and she needs someone just as fucked up, and early Willow is just not ready for that

Grinning at her, Buffy proffered her own off-brand cola into the air, waiting for Willow to tap it, "Buffy and Willow night? Best night!"

Her cheeks pinkening as her heart squeezed, Willow took a deep draught of her drink.

Finishing her own drink, Buffy turned back to her. "Well? Let the romantic comedies commence!"
