Happy 20th Anniversary Buffy the Vampire Slayer

The first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired 20 years ago, today. While some people wonder why I still love this show, it has quite literally brought me to the best moments in my life.

Friends. My life long friends showed me a show so we could hang out away from my rather tumultuous home.

RP. While I RPed before BtVS, this is where I found a home and wonderful online friendships that I cherish.

Love. BtVS brought me to the one person I adore most in this world, my fiance. ❤

Passion/Livelyhood. I watched a show that made me fall in love with creating monsters and fashion trends. The cast themselves told me I should follow my dream. And so I did.

This was more than a supernatural TV show to me. It made a difference in my world. It taught me about the kind of person I should be and the many mistakes that will be made. It made me who I am.

So the happiest of anniversaries to this wonderful show. Thank you Buffy.

screaming every time I read a sfawtde fanfiction because I have two versions of derek in my head: one that has infinite knowledge, including avery's personality traits and how he would react to common things (so he has to choose his words Very Very Carefully for an outcome he wants) (any love confession from avery should have gone "I love you" "I know")

and one that has forbidden knowledge, aka a literal interpretation of the king in yellow where whoever has been inflicted by the king has the meta knowledge the author also has

this literal interpretation means that derek Knows Everything That Happens In The Fanfiction. and he knows that he's merely a character at the whim of this new author

and he 1. lets it happen because it's not too bad or 2. is at the mercy of the author and is suffering the whole time, and the suffering is only shown at the author's discretion

I know the first version is MUCH easier to write (how does one write a character who knows they are a character being puppeteered by a higher order being? that anything that happens is at the will of this being? who is ultimately apathetic to his state of mind for their twisted enjoyment? who is the one who allows him to have personality? no matter how genuine avery's feelings are, he knows this being is making him be that way...) but honestly I might write my own fanfiction of my own interpretation of both versions (I might go insane, who knows)

Was Der originally a bait in the King's plan? Someone to hook Avery into being the King's vessel?

If the King was all knowing/had unlimited access to forbidden, metatextual knowledge, wouldn't he know how much of a wrench Der was to the system?

The only real explanation I can really come up with is that because of this immense knowledge of the outside world, instead of determining what Der himself would do, the King calculated off of probabilities from different ARG protagonists as well as accounting for what a logical person would do.

But the beauty of this series never stemmed from logic, did it?

Der was someone truly unique to the King. Sure, this King has seen smart people before, and may have even seen the insanity these people can accomplish, but these smart people usually are good at preserving their livelihood and keep their intellect running at all costs.

Usually.

But smart people are a dime a dozen in their own eyes. They aren't machines. And science has shown time and time again, the more consciousness one adds to something, the more unpredictable they get. Such as still having qualities the King may perceive as weak. The biggest one?

Empathy.

I can see the King measuring intelligence through how the smart people of the past have used their intelligence in quantifiable ways, such as authority, which sometimes stems from a lack of this humanity.

And that could have been the King's downfall.

Der was likely someone young and unachieved, someone who doesn't have a large enough influence, yet smart enough to accomplish the things he did in the videos.

The King never doubted he could do amazing things.

He just assumed he would want to live to tell the tale.

He assumed that Der was a self-serving automaton with an aspiration to do something outside of this block game.

And the machine-like qualities didn't feel human enough to the King.

Which is why Avery is the perfect vessel. He is naive. Controllable.

Der was not.
