HTC Wildfire S is not crap. Just work with it.

Tired of folks dogging this sweet little phone. It was not designed to be a multimedia powerhouse like the iPhone or even like its big brother HTC One V, but like all lower-end phones there are certain things you pay attention to to get the best use out of it. Most people who have the phone gripe the most about the low internal memory (which all low end phones have). Maybe Europeans are used to being economical than us fat, lazy Americans, but I found a Swedish man who found a workaround that is working for him and his Wildfire S:

a) 15MB free internal memory is a lower limit. Once you go below this various things stop working. Installations from market, sync of gmail, news. I believe this is because the OS reserves some space as a minimum. So if you need to install an app but are below 15 MB, you need to crawl back over that limit. The single easiest thing to do is to delete the stored data in the Internet app (if using the stock one). Apart from that: clearing caches, deleting apps that take up space on internal memory, moving apps to sd card (but I assume everyone has already done that).   b) If you have installed only a few apps, and have less than 20 MB free, you may have bloated files in the System Data. This data (the directory, to be exact) is not accessible to non-root users but log files etc may be written here. (There are some fun posts written about DesireS users with 900 MB of junk files in their system area.)  To find out how much space the System Data uses, you will need an app. I used DiskUsage. It presents results in a nice graphical fashion, and you get a list of which apps use space on the internal storage as well. Example: At factory settings, my phone has 8MB in System Data. Before the factory reset 30 minutes ago, it had 100MB (and free space with no downloaded apps was 13.2 MB) If you find that you want to clear space in the System Data, tough. As you cannot access the System Data without root, I think you are left with two radical options. Anyone reading this who can think of something else to do? a) root the phone. Myself, I've decided against that. Good luck if you go for it. b) Reset the phone to factory settings. Note that this will delete ALL information on the phone, so make sure you back up all important stuff. Contacts, messages  etc. Your saved games are probably gone. All apps will be gone. There are a number of good instructions on how to back up everything available, find one or two and read. But a reset only treats symptoms, not cause. Here's the caveat: Why did you get all that stuff in the System Data to begin with? What makes sure it won't come back? The problem is that something that happened - some app, some crash, something else, created the bloat. You have - without root - no real way to tell except by careful experimentation. And even so you cannot be sure if it is that new app that gives you problems, or a hickup in the OS. So you may have to do this over and over again. (What is in the bloat, you may ask? My speculation is that it is log files written but not cleared up, esp after some crash, not well behaved apps being a bit indiscriminate about writing data etc.)

How do you root a HTC Wildfire S easily??????? My sister is needing to delete some apps that she will not use but can't delete or transfer to her SD card. Silly HTC and its small internal memory.

My phone was playing up because it didn't have enough memory, so I plugged it into the computer and started deleting random things. I must have deleted something important as most of my contacts have been deleted and it won't let me add any contacts. Every time I try it says 'People has stopped working unexpectedly' or 'Google Framework has stopped working unexpectedly'. I have no idea what to do, it's been like this for days. :S Anyone know how to fix it? Or should I just go into the phone shop? I'm worried they'll charge me lots of money though...

Decision time, an Android phone now, or a Gaming Laptop in God knows when...

So my birthday is coming up on the 15th, and my family is offering to buy me one of two phones, or to just give me money to help save up for a Gaming Laptop for college.

As far as phones go, my BoBo ass carrier provides the:

HTC Wildfire S for $120, plus some money maybe?

Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G for $200

or $150 for a Gaming Laptop that I don't even know if I'll be able to afford by college.

As it stands my current phone is dying at a miserable rate, anybody who's seen it could tell you. My major in college will be media post-production, which DOES require some heavy horsepower in a computer, and I can't necessarily lug around a $600 custom built desktop, so I'd probably have to save $800 for a Gaming Laptop that would be able to render video and graphics in a somewhat timely fashion. I'm in a crossroads because on one hand, I'll probably have no phone by this August, and on the other, I don't even know if I'd be able to AFFORD a sufficient computer by the time I need it.
