It’s interesting to see lesser known plants with horticulturally famous relatives at their peak making their own case for superstardom. Many are familiar with proteas from floral arrangements or neighborhood gardens but the lesser known waterlily sugarbush (Protea subvestita) has gorgeous foliage with silvery hairs on its immature leaves and stems and beautiful flowers that are well worth checking out. Similarly, lily of the nile (Agapanthus sp.) is ubiquitous in landscaping but the Drakensberg agapanthus (Agapanthus inapertus ssp. inapertus) with its pendulous, dark blue to violet flowers is a unique treat you won’t often see in a parking lot planting.
